Hello from Asian Highlands! We are so excited to welcome one-year-old Chinese red panda, William, to Utah’s Hogle Zoo! William joins us from Lincoln Children's Zoo as part of our transition to Chinese red panda care, allowing for future breeding opportunities. William is a cautiously curious Chinese red panda, eager to explore new surroundings and enrichment opportunities. William’s care team describes him as a smart panda who enjoys training and learning new behaviors and especially loves snack time with fruit or bamboo.? ? Chinese red pandas are well-equipped for life in Utah – they tend to live in colder climates and have larger bodies and longer fur to help keep them warm. With their reddish fur, striped tails, and darker facial markings, these pandas are similar to Himalayan red pandas and face the same threats: habitat loss, degradation, and poaching.? ? William’s arrival comes after former Himalayan red panda, MowMow, departed Hogle Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the Red Panda Species Survival Plan (SSP).? ? Native to the mountainous forests of China, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar, red pandas belong to their own family, Ailuridae. They are divided into two species: Ailurus fulgens fulgens (Himalayan red pandas, like MowMow) and Ailurus fulgens styani (Chinese red pandas, like William). Through our partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) and several recommendations, we have transferred our care from Himalayan red pandas to Chinese red pandas. We are so excited to welcome William to the Hogle Zoo family! You can visit him now in Asian Highlands. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dh4aNs39

Elegant and hemisphere-hopping Aleutian terns are seabirds with slender wings that help them undertake long flights. But don’t confuse them with Arctic terns! Here’s how to tell them apart: ??Aleutian terns have a black cap with a white forehead and Arctic terns have a fully black cap. ?? Aleutian terns have black legs and a black bill, while Arctic terns sport red ones. ??Aleutian tern vocalizations are higher-pitched and soft in contrast to Arctic terns’ harsh and raspy calls. ??Each year, Aleutian terns migrate long distances from Alaska and head south over the open ocean to winter in Southeast Asia/Oceania, including the Philippines and Indonesia (a distance of almost 10,000 miles)! Young Aleutian terns undertake their first migration as early as 5 weeks after they hatch. These beautiful birds need our help. Aleutian tern numbers in their Alaska breeding range appear to have plummeted since the 1960s. USFWS and partners are collaborating on a state-wide survey to identify current nesting colony locations and estimate the number of Aleutian terns that remain in Alaska. This information is critical for proactively managing and conserving this species. ?? Learn more about the Aleutian tern and current surveys at the link in the comments. Let's delve deep into the world of the Bearded Vulture. ?? With its striking appearance and fascinating behaviour, the Bearded Vulture is a bird that's impossible to ignore. But what makes this majestic bird so unique? In flight, the Bearded Vulture is unmistakable, boasting long, narrow wings and a wedge-shaped tail. Its relatively small head is offset by a powerful neck, and its distinctive waddling gait on the ground is a sight. The bird's stunning plumage truly sets it apart – a mesmerising mix of dark grey, rusty, and whitish hues, with a grey-blue back and creamy-coloured forehead. The black band across its eyes and black beard under its chin give the bird its English name, while its love of dust-bathing and mineral-rich waters can leave it with a variably orange or rusty hue. Bearded Vultures take their time when it comes to breeding, reaching sexual maturity at around 5-7 years old. Pairs typically lay 1-2 eggs, but only the stronger chick survives. It's a slow process, and that’s why restoring their populations to the wild takes many years. After the species was driven to extinction in the Alps in 1913, reintroduction efforts have successfully brought the Bearded Vulture back to the region. Thanks to breeding programmes and releases into the wild, there are now over 60 breeding pairs in the Alps, and the population is on the rise. Reintroduction programmes have also been successful in Andalusia, and are underway in Maestrazgo in Spain, Massif Central and Pre-Alps in France, and restocking efforts in Corsica. In the next few years, we will also be releasing birds in Bulgaria to bring back the species to the country. Before embarking on reintroduction programmes, extensive groundwork was laid. To ensure the long-term survival of the Bearded Vulture, it's essential to protect its habitat, reduce human persecution, tackle poisoning, and promote coexistence with humans. Collaborating with our partners across Europe and beyond is crucial in paving the way for the species' recovery. Thank you all for your support! This September, we will introduce the remaining European vulture species as one of our ways to celebrate #VultureDay! ??

Happy National Endangered Species Day; and in a cruel twist of fate, happy also National Mushroom Hunting Day. Those poor defenceless fungi never even see the sniper-like truffle scenting snouts sniff them out. But mushrooms are not going extinct. In fact, if you liked 'The Last of Us', you’ll know they may take over the world someday. What is going extinct, however, or at least critically endangered, is the saola (Asian unicorn), vaquita, which looks like the unfinished drawing of a dolphin, and the amur leopard, which quite frankly I think is just really good at hiding. Obviously when a Javan rhino horn can sell for $30,000 per kg, it’s, too, going to be poached to the point of perish. Palm oil deforestation has consistently driven numbers of the world’s fifth smartest species (after humans), orangutans, down to deathly dances on the endangered list, while the Yangtze finless porpoise, which swims in toxic-tainted waters, boasts an annual decline of 13 per cent, and is expected to be fully extinct, thanks to a complete lack of conservation efforts, within a decade. Another dying breed: the diarist. Revered and renowned poet Lord Byron’s memoirs were burned to dust on this day in 1824. Despite declaring long before he reached his death bed at 36 that they be published, six of Sixth Baron Byron’s friends deemed the diaries so scandalous that they’d damage the Brit’s reputation forever, and conspired to complete the greatest crime in literary history. But it does beg the question: what was so incriminating? Was it that he sired a daughter with his half-sister? That his sometimes homosexuality might be so shameful post-mortem? Or was he the Jeffrey Epstein of his time? Maybe malaria was a ruse, and he too was murdered. Who was on his “list”? We will likely never know his end game. Precisely forty years today, though, in 1984, Jack Tramiel founded Atari (originally as Tramel Technology, Ltd) which gave rise to some of the most iconic games in history, like Space Invaders and Pac-Man. For me, as soon as controllers started adding button combinations like ‘Down, Forward, Back, Triangle, L1, Circle, Up’ for fatalities, I gave up on gaming. Just give me the simplicity of an Atari joystick replete with a single big red button. I’m an old dog and do not like new tricks! Pew-pew! #EndangeredSpecies #LordByron #Atari

The Long-billed Thrush is patchily distributed in the Himalayas and northern Vietnam. Habitat consists of dense undergrowth and swampy patches in deep forest in the temperate zone. In Bhutan the Long-billed Thrush is an uncommon altitudinal migrant that appears to be quite widespread. It has been found throughout the temperate zone and the high east, and is known in the eastern foothills from a single record. In summer it occupies the cool broadleaf forest zone at 2000-2800 m, reaching 3000 m. In winter it remains present to 2600 m but descends to 1400 m, more occasionally to 1100 m, where it regularly accompanies forktails feeding in road drainage ditches or along small streams in the forest. By mid March most have left the wintering areas, although it is occasionally noted at lower altitude until mid April. Breeding commences in this period, as evidenced by a pair with a recently fledged young at 2000 m. From August birds dispersed and again found outside the breeding areas. On average 1.3 birds are noted per sighting with a maximum 3 numbers. I often talk to you about the Bengal tiger in India ????… but do you know about the Sumatran tiger? The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a subspecies of tiger endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is the smallest of the existing tigers, but despite its modest size, it is just as powerful and majestic as its larger cousins. Characteristics of the Sumatran tiger: Size and Weight: Males measure between 2.20 and 2.55 meters in length (including the tail) and weigh between 100 and 140 kg. Females are smaller, measuring between 2.15 and 2.30 meters and weighing between 75 and 110 kg. Coat: Their coat is darker than that of other subspecies, with narrower and closer-set stripes. This coloration and pattern are adapted to the dense jungles of Sumatra, providing effective camouflage. Habitat: They primarily inhabit the tropical forests, swamps, and grasslands of Sumatra. Conservation efforts are underway to save this subspecies, including habitat protection measures, anti-poaching initiatives, and captive breeding programs. In summary, the Sumatran tiger is a powerful symbol of Sumatra’s unique biodiversity and the urgency of wildlife conservation worldwide. @_planettiger_ #safariwithplanettiger #sumatrantiger #sumatratiger #tigerphotos #tigerphotography #tiger #endangeredspecies #endangeredtigers #endangeredwildlife #wildlife #ongplanettiger #animalsofinstagram #animalsonearth #animalsoftheworld #animalsphotography #bigcatsphotography #bigcatsofinstagram #bigcats

?? Attention for the Pharaoh's chicken, please! ?? The Egyptian Vulture, once revered by the ancient Egyptians as a symbol of the goddess Isis and immortalized in hieroglyphs as the letter A, was nicknamed the ‘Pharaoh's chicken’ and protected by laws so strict that harming one was punishable by death. Today, this sacred bird faces the harsh reality of extinction. As Europe’s only long-distance migratory vulture, the Egyptian Vulture can fly up to 640 km per day, covering 5000 km between its European breeding sites and wintering grounds at the edge of the Sahara. It is the smallest out of Europe’s four vulture species.?With its white plumage and bright yellow face, this bird plays a crucial role in ecosystems by cleaning up carcasses and preventing disease. ?? On their journey across three continents, the Egyptian Vulture faces danger at every turn. Escaping electrocution by powerlines or poisoning isn’t always enough, they may still fall victim to illegal shooting or trafficking. The European population has dropped by 50% in the last 50 years, and the Balkan population has decreased by 80% up until recently. But there’s hope! ?? In Greece, our partner Ορνιθολογικ? BirdLife Greece? recently celebrated the hatching of a chick after many years of conservation work and a field survey in Morocco's Middle Atlas Mountains by our partner GREPOM/BirdLife Morocco confirmed at least 10 breeding pairs in the area! Our Partner in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, is leading large-scale initiatives, in which many BirdLife Partners are involved, that ultimately leads to an increase of the Egyptian Vulture in the area again after more than 40 years of decline. ?? Did you know? The Egyptian Vulture is one of the few bird species to use tools, using pebbles to hammer open eggs as large as an Ostrich’s! ?? ??IUCN status: Endangered ?? Wingspan: 150-170 cm ? Life span: Up to 35 years ?? Favourite food: carrion, small mammals, reptiles, and eggs ?? Top Speed: 80 km/h ??? Kalin Botev, BSPB

The Red Panda, scientifically known as Ailurus fulgens, is a small arboreal mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. With its dense reddish-brown fur, black belly and legs, and distinctive white-lined ears and ringed tail, the Red Panda is a visually striking creature. It is well-adapted to its forest habitat with flexible joints and curved semi-retractile claws for climbing. Despite its name, the Red Panda is not closely related to the giant panda but shares a more distant relationship with raccoons, weasels, and skunks. The species has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2015, facing threats from habitat loss and poaching. Conservation efforts are underway across its range, including community-based programs in Nepal and captive breeding initiatives in zoos worldwide. #redpanda #panda #cuteanimals

?? 40 Przewalski's horses are on their way to the Kazakhstan Steppe! Did you know that Przewalski's horses are the only truly wild horse species left in the world? They were once declared extinct in the wild due to overhunting and habitat loss, but successful breeding programs in zoos and wildlife parks around the world have allowed for their reintroduction into their natural habitats. Conservation efforts for Przewalski's horses continue to be crucial as they face challenges such as loss of genetic diversity, disease, and competition with livestock for resources. Their survival is an important part of biodiversity and offers valuable insights into the preservation of endangered species worldwide. Check out this article to learn more about the reintroduction efforts! "Prague Zoo said on Tuesday, March 5, it would transport eight endangered wild horses to a Kazakhstan steppe in June in a joint project with the Tierpark Berlin Zoo. The zoos are planning to take at least 40 Przewalski's horses to roam free in the Altyn Dala (Golden Steppe) area in central Kazakhstan in the next five years." Horses are an important species to help disrupt vegetation cycles and drive complexity in the landscape. #przewalskisHorse #rewilding #naturerecovery #endangeredspecies #biodiversity
