Thanks everybody! Here’s the profile they printed with some of my thoughts: If you could give your younger-self advice, what would it be? I would share this quote from Grace Lee Boggs, “You don’t choose the times you live in, but you do choose who you are to be.” Do you have any event/movie/music suggestions for our readers to check out in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month? Learn about unsung heroes and Asian American movement figures like Kiyoshi Kuromiya. The publication “Them” created a short video on his life, using his actual voice to narrate, that’s worth checking out. He was born in a Japanese concentration camp during WWII and was active in the civil rights and anti-war movement, and made significant contributions to HIV/AIDS activism. https://lnkd.in/gWW9CWe8 How has your heritage shaped the person you are today? My heritage has enabled me to better understand the world, and to connect my lived experiences to those of past generations. Heritage is not just about language or food, as wonderful as they are, but also about my political identity. Our collective histories of struggle and resistance give us strength to fight for collective liberation, and it means that we build on those who came before us and we never do this work alone. What can New York policymakers do to support the AAPI-community in the short-term? In the long-term? Our policymakers have to engage in principled struggle to combat inequality and stop the political cowardice of selling out the most vulnerable, because ultimately none of us are free until all of us are. Until we address the root causes of violence in our society, we are doomed to repeat these cycles of violence. We must redistribute resources away from systems, like prisons and war, that kill and destroy and towards those that affirm life.
Congratulations, Jason Wu, for being named to the PoliticsNY and amNY Metro Asian American and Pacific Islander Power Players List! In addition to his work with Legal Aid, Wu, Attorney-in-Charge of The Legal Aid Society’s Harlem Community Law Office, serves on Manhattan’s Community Board 11 in East Harlem and is currently a co-chair for GAPIMNY-Empowering Queer & Trans Asian Pacific Islanders, a queer and trans AAPI organization that focuses on community building, political education, and mutual aid. “Our policymakers have to engage in principled struggle to combat inequality and stop the political cowardice of selling out the most vulnerable, because ultimately none of us are free until all of us are,” Wu tells the publication. The inaugural Power Players List honors New York’s most influential AAPI elected officials, executives, creators, business leaders, and activists from across industries and organizations. Founder and Executive Director of Modern Family Institute. Supporting an evolving ecosystem of families and relationships.
Exciting Developments for Family Diversity in Berkeley and Oakland!???? As someone deeply invested in evolving family dynamics and the recognition of diverse relationship structures, I’m thrilled to share news that hits close to home and heart. Berkeley and Oakland City Council members are leading a charge to protect diverse families, proposing nondiscrimination bills that pave the way for inclusivity and legal recognition. This initiative, building off a bill initially proposed by Polyactive, and championed by the grassroots efforts of the Organization for Polyamory and Ethical Non-monogamy and supported by the Modern Family Institute and the Polyamory Legal Advocacy Coalition, aims to safeguard families and relationships from discrimination in housing, business, and city services. It’s a testament to the power of community advocacy and the urgent need for our laws to reflect the diversity of modern love and kinship. The legislation is not just about legal protections; it’s a statement of belonging and acceptance. It challenges us to examine what family means in the 21st century, recognizing that love, support, and commitment are not confined to structures that gained popularity in the 1940s. Let’s use this moment to engage in deeper conversations about family, love, and the importance of legal inclusivity. Share your thoughts and join me in celebrating this step forward for diversity and acceptance. Together, we can build a more inclusive future for all families. ?????????? https://lnkd.in/gafSjFU2 #oakland #berkeley #inclusivity #relationshipdynamics #inclusivenarratives #embracediversity #loveunitesus #healthyrelationships #embraceconnection #polyamory #poly #polyamorous #multiamory #compassionatelove #nonmonogamous #nonmonogamy #normalizingnonmonogamy #love #dating #consesualnonmonogamy #cnm #ethicalnonmonogamy #enm #diversity #loveislove #openrelationship #openrelating #polycurious #relationshipdiversity

Latina Native Spanish Speaker| Military Spouse| President Chamber for Hispanic Progress| Community Leader| Philanthropist | Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Professional | Program Manager|Business Development Executive
Today marks a new beginning for these families. For the last year, they have endured a difficult period as their children faced countless violent racial motived attacks at their schools, targeted based on their status as immigrants. Today, one more of their assailants pled guilty in Norfolk District Court. In a bizarre twist, one of the attackers had taken out cross warrants against the victims, converting them from victims to defendants, doubtless in a vain attempt to pressure the victims to drop their pursuit of accountability. This situation highlights the absurdity of a system where false allegations can distort justice, and where individuals charged with sorting truth from fiction outside of court permit retaliatory charges to go forward. These cross-warrant procedures are allowed to proceed, even though prosecutors knew the allegations were bogus and misleading. As an immigrant myself, I worry about the message this process sends to oppressed communities about voicing and presenting crimes of abuse and violence against minorities.?The courts and prosecutors should encourage victim reporting and resorting to the police and courts for help, rather than engaging in violent self help.?Cross-warrants, ironically, have the opposite effect.?They show our legal system can easily be manipulated to the detriment of the vulnerable.?This case underscores the urgent need for legal reforms to protect immigrant communities from such legal manipulations and ensure that the voices of the oppressed are heard and respected.?Allowing aggressors to play victim without procedural oversight sets a dangerous precedent for the treatment of the vulnerable within our legal system. We must stand together to advocate for a fair and just legal process that truly serves all members of our community, especially those who are most vulnerable. The integrity of our justice system depends on it.
