CFM news: As you munch on your pancakes today, use the plates they're landing on to start discussing Lent with your Children. Plates of pLENTy is a mostly child-led resource which helps children consider practical ways to respond to Lent. There are 4 empty plates which focus on 4 key themes through Lent: * A plate to Serve others * A plate to Give (to those around you or to God) * A plate to Love the world we live in * A plate to help us think about the way we Live Although there are a few ideas on the plates, each child can think about the response they want to give to this challenge. There is space on the plate to encourage reflection on the action they chose and what they learned/what God revealed to them during that time. They can either pick one plate for the whole of Lent or complete them all during the 40 day period. Download here: https://lnkd.in/eKz39nJV

Today is a day where Indigenous people mourn and remember all the Indigenous children who were removed from their families, cultures, and lands and placed in residential boarding schools through Orange Shirt Day. Few non-natives realize that children were often used as hostages in land treaty negotiations to bring the leaders of Tribal Nations to the table. The separation of children from their families was intentional, cruel and a TOOL of control by the US government. Indian "schools" created to "civilize" native communities date back to the 1600s as first set up by the Jesuits in what we now know as St. Mary's Maryland. Perhaps you also don't know that the federal boarding school concept was piloted in the Chesapeake region. Richard Henry Pratt worked to create the first federal education program to "civilize" Native Americans at the Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA in 1875. Shortly thereafter, Pratt would found the Carlisle Industrial Indian School and in 1887, the passage of the Compulsory Indian Education Act would spread federal boarding schools as the dominant pathway for assimilation and cultural genocide. Pratt became infamous for his mantra of "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" and as the founding father of the federal boarding school system, would unleash widespread devastation on Indigenous communities. Removed from their families, their language, and their lands, generations of Indigenous children would be victimized by these schools in horrific ways as abuse, malnutrition, and disease was rampant. A taskforce convened by U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland would find that American federal boarding schools were directly responsible nearly 1,000 deaths of Indian children and victimize of hundreds of thousands of Indigenous children. Trauma is generational and healing still continues. To non-native allies and partners, please read and share this post and take a moment to reflect on why separation from land created a separation from family, culture, and safety. #LandBack #OrangeShirtDay #Indigenous #solidarity #truth #reconciliation
Orange Shirt Day is next week! Observed annually on Sept. 30, the day serves as a reminder of the traumatic experiences faced by Indigenous children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities and placed in residential boarding schools. Wear orange to raise awareness and promote the message that Every Child Matters. Learn more at orangeshirtday.org.
