Here is an interesting perspective on layoffs in tech that can be applied to a number of other industries. Layoffs is the wrong word to use & not what they're doing. ? What they're doing is reconfiguring their staffing model by reducing their permanent employee headcount & replacing them with independent contractors. ? Several reasons for them doing so, for example: They want to break free from stringent employment contracts & the consequential threat of labour litigation, reputational damage, & costs when they are forced to retrench people because of market & economic fluctuations. They know that a transient, flexible workforce is how the future world of work is going to look. They know that time to recruit contractors is significantly faster than trying to recruit permanent employees, so they can be more agile & responsive. They save money on not paying benefits which come as part & parcel of permanent employment contracts. They rid themselves of having to run performance management processes when people underperform – they can end independent contracts without having to give any reasons. It’s NOT just “Tech Workers”. It’s Physicians also who that are losing their chance to train in a medical residency position, year after year, to foreign physicians coming into this country on H1B visas. Further, I call BULL on the notion that these workers are being “victimized” by the “Big Bad American corporations” because these workers are “well-informed” of the requirements for this visa when THEY DECIDE to sign up for it!!! In addition, the notion of “victimization” SWIFTLY DISSIPATES because Physicians recruited on H1B visas during the MATCH and SOAP programs OFTEN BRAG about being “ENTITLED” TO THEIR POSITION BECAUSE OF THEIR USMLE SCORES, despite having paid ZERO TAXES to the United States of America to deserve the TAXPAYER PAID SALARY THEY REAP from the MEDICARE FUNDED TRAINING SLOT that they STEAL from OTHER QUALIFIED AMERICAN PHYSICIANS with PASSING USMLE SCORES!!! How are you coming into someone else’s country STEALING JOBS and BRAGGING ABOUT HAVING A RIGHT TO DO SO based on a USMLE SCORE when the U.S. Citizen you are STEALING FROM ALSO HAS PASSING SCORES??? Especially since you have developed a sophisticated system for “cheating” on the USMLE and since “your group” has gotten away with the THEFT for so long that you ALSO have a WELL DEVELOPED SYSTEM for NEPOTISM AND CRONYISM TO ENSURE PERPETUAL RECRUITMENT WITHIN YOUR GROUP!!!

**Layoffs** Layoffs are often considered a taboo subject within a company, but sometimes market developments and technology force businesses to make this decision in order to adapt or even just survive. As employees, we are often unprepared to face the wave of layoffs, especially if it happens when we are no longer young. My advice to those of you still earning an income is to start preparing backup plans, such as setting aside 15-20% of your income for savings, no matter what. Once you've accumulated enough, use it to create additional income streams. Continuously improve your knowledge and skills to avoid being stuck in one area of expertise. Also, make sure to surround yourself with positive people and help others; hopefully, in times of difficulty, friends or colleagues will support you. Lastly, remember to pray to God Almighty. ????
