KYR (KNOW YOUR RESEARCH) People mention the definition of Research, as per their understanding. When I started my Research Journey as a Researcher in 1985 (initiated with M. Phil. and also completed Ph.D. both on a full time basis immediately after M.Sc.), I was motivated with the definition of Research given as follows: "Research is an activity that contributes to the understanding of a phenomenon" [Kuhn, 1962; Lakatos, 1978], where Phenomenon: a set of behaviors of some entity(ies) that is found interesting by a research community; Understanding: knowledge that allows prediction of the behavior of some aspect of the phenomenon; and Activities considered appropriate to the production of understanding (knowledge) are known as the research methods and techniques. The beauty of this definition is that if the entity changes the Research Area changes - just like if entitles are consumers and their behavior towards a product, its Marketing Research; if entitles are stocks and their behavior, its Financial Market Research and if the entities are employees and their behavior in a company, then its HR Research. From 2000 onwards, I have conducted either FDP or given Expert Talk on "Research Methodology" in those institutions where I worked so far. I was offered a FDP in 2019 titled "Publish and Flourish" @ CMS Business School, JAIN UNIVERSITY, Bangalore. I got an opportunity to address a big group of Participants?on "Unveiling the Power of Research: Shaping your Career in the Modern Age" as an Expert, thanks to the Coordinators and Management of GLA University. This was my first Assignment as Ex-Professor (I left Jain on 30th Dec. 2023) again on the topic of my interest - Research Methodology. The Objectives of the Session held were as follows: 1.To motivate research interest among the participants 2.To support the participants in understanding the research process 3.To identify trends in Career 4.To highlight the Role of Analytics in Business Verticals 5.To magnify the Importance of Statistics in Research 6.To suggest different Tools of Analytics in Research I am happy to inform you that the Interactive session was well received by the Participants, as per the feedback. All so true...writing (a surprise even to me) has become more important over the last 20+ years in business. Does "career path" = "way to provide for myself and my family in (at least) a middle class sense"? The challenge, though, is that companies are not good at evaluating these higher order, crucial skills. They use shorthand, leaning on the culling inefficiencies of higher education. "Oh, you went to XYZ University for a [insert generic and relatively useless business degree]? We recognize your type and have a place for you [soul-crushing BDR role]!" A terrific hack for liberal arts majors, and arguably a lot more fun than taking a basic coding course, is to get involved with a startup community. Volunteer to help a startup. Stand up a basic website? Write the copy to improve it? Market analysis? This is more difficult if your university is distant from a startup hub (most cities have something going on). But nothing is stopping a student from researching start up groups in their nearest cities and getting involved virtually. A final thought: geography still matters. In the early 2000s, a lit degree in Seattle was worth 10x the same degree (even from an 'elite' uni) in a city that wasn't booming. Weird place to finish, but lit majors should heed Maggie Thatcher's advice and "put their track shoes on."
A student asked me, "Are there career paths for literature majors beyond teaching?" Here's part of what I said: The key thing to remember about a literature degree – or any liberal arts degree – is that it teaches you how to read in both the broadest and most specific meanings of that term. You'll understand how to "read a room" for relationships and contexts, while being able to understand the connotations and denotations being uttered around you. This puts you at a significant intellectual and social advantage. Additionally, your abilities to write clearly and to arrange ideas in logical and persuasive order will be skills very much in demand – even in the age of AI, where computers cannot build the kinds of rhetorical transitions that make texts feel human and specific. So all of this is to say, there's plenty of work outside writing and teaching. Because of the ways HR departments scan resumes, etc., you'll do well to take some electives in areas like economics, design, maybe coding. Don't think of these areas as things you need to specialize in. Instead, think of them as giving you insight into the ways business gets done. Most people can master, say, In-Design with enough training – few can use it as effectively to communicate as a literature major. What are your thoughts?

Looking for Research Opportunities! This is my first time posting on this platform, and most of my connections here are #professors and #researchers. So, this post is specifically for you! I have completed my Master’s in Applied Economics from Lucknow University India and spent the last five years working as a freelancer in different fields. While freelancing has given me valuable skills, my true passion has always been researching. Over time, my interest has shifted towards pursuing a PhD in Economics, but as many of you know, most PhD programs require prior research experience. That’s exactly what I’m looking for right now. I am eager to gain hands-on experience in research—whether it’s data analysis, literature review, or assisting in ongoing projects. At this stage, my primary goal is learning, so I am even open to working for free if it means gaining valuable research exposure. If you have any research work related to economics, please feel free to reach out. I’d love to contribute and learn from experienced researchers like you! Also, please repost this—your one repost might help someone find the opportunity they need. Looking forward to connecting and collaborating! #ResearchOpportunity #EconomicsResearch #PhDJourney #ResearchAssistant #LearningAndGrowth #Phdeconomics #Economicsresearcher

Five Years Ago, I Completed My Bachelors... You know, thinking back, completing my bachelors feels like a bittersweet memory. It all started at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad I did research for the first time, completed a thesis, and even got it published. Back then, I was a bit clueless, to be honest. These experiences allowed me to learn and live the research process. They helped me realize my passions. Eventually, I published two more papers. How can you find similar opportunities for yourself??? ??The easiest way is to ask your friends if they're interested in writing a paper and start working on it together. ??Approach your professors and see if they need any help with their research. ??Look for professionals on LinkedIn who are seeking research assistants. ??Connect with people who are genuinely interested in research and try to collaborate on a topic you're both passionate about. ??Lastly, explore various research labs. Don't worry about not knowing enough or feeling clueless. There are people out there who are ready to help and guide you. You just need to take the first step and start???? Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Take that first step, and the rest will follow. Five years later, I'm doing my PhD, all thanks to the foundation laid in those early years. P.S: I'm launching my first digital product soon, free for anyone struggling with Literature review. Can't wait to share it with you! P.P.S : This is me in bachelor's ????

?????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????? ???????? ??????????????: Over the past few days, I’ve received numerous messages from IIM Shillong call-getters, many of whom are apprehensive about the extempore round that was part of last year’s selection process. The common concern is: ???????? ???? ?? ??????’?? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ??????????? ?????? ???? ?? ?????????? ?????? 3 ?????????????? ?????????? ???????? 1 ???????????? ???? ??????????????????????? Having gone through the same process, here’s my take: 1. ???????????? ?????? ????????????????????: The topics can be anything! Some examples from last year include: - ???????????? ???????????????? - ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????? - ???????? ?????? ???????????? - ?????? ???????? ???????? The key takeaway? ??????????’?? ???? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ????????????! The panel is more interested in assessing your thought structure than your understanding of the topic. 2. ????’?? ?????? ?????????? ??????????????????????: I personally misunderstood my topic and spoke on something completely unrelated, yet I converted! A panelist, now one of our beloved finance faculty, later confirmed that they evaluate '??????' you think and present, not your grasp of the topic. 3. ?????? ???? ?????????? ?????? 3 ?????????????? - ?????????????? ???????? ???????? ????????: Use the 1-minute preparation to jot down key points (you’ll be provided with a pen and paper). - ?????????????? ???????????????? ????????????????: Bring in relatable, real-life instances. I used my experience of representing India U-16 and West Bengal in football to steer the discussion and hook the panel’s attention. - ???????? ????????????????????: Practice at home with a timer to understand the flow. While the ideal duration is 2.5 to 3 minutes, it’s okay if you speak for less—as long as it’s structured and impactful. In my case, I didn’t even use the full 3 minutes. When I paused, the panel asked me to conclude, and that worked just fine! ?????????? ???????????????? : Don’t overthink! Treat the extempore as an opportunity to showcase your thought process and communication skills. Even if you feel unprepared, your unique experiences and examples can make all the difference. Best of luck to all aspirants! Ace your GDPI like a pro. Feel free to reach out for guidance—I’m here to help! Each year, around this time, we evaluate the students who seek admission to the prestigious MA HRM&LR programme of TISS, Mumbai. The extempore reflection, group discussions, and interviews continue for at least a fortnight. I often muse over how time and destiny are so interrelated. We have not been able to fully grasp either yet. The relevance of how an answer given at a particular time paved the way to new destinies is breathtaking to even think about. While we earnestly try to find the best amongst the highly talented young aspirants, we also dedicate some time to engage with the beauty of the process called selection. How do we choose, and what sort of tacit elements spring up in our neural networks while observing a candidate? To put some perspective, we primarily tend to evaluate the depth of engagement the candidate has had with the undergraduate/recent subject of learning. We look for a well-structured foundation in their core subject. Secondly, we wish to see how the students see themselves as recipients of the knowledge of the stream of study they wish to take up now, in this case, HRM&LR. Do they feel quite ready to take up this area, and does the curriculum genuinely excite them? This would mean that the candidate will be expected to know a bit about what happens in the HR spectrum, some basics, and the relevance of those today. Thirdly, what any programme looks for is the suitability of the candidate to the classroom we envisage to have. One would like to bring in candidates from a variety of backgrounds to enhance the diversity of discussions in the classroom. Also, the candidates are expected to have an essential reading of Business and a general awareness of the world around them. Some implicit elements that interest the evaluators include the originality of the candidate and how one is open to newer experiences while ably positioning one’s life journey thus far. This could also include some early indication of the love for broad reading and genuine perspective building. In their own interest, the candidate could engage in a reflective exercise to help put forward perspectives that could be unique about them. They could read some good HRM textbooks and contextualize these readings with their individual profile and experiences. Some of the pitfalls that could be avoided: §????HRM includes more than just the Motivation theories, and Maslow is not the only contributor §????HRM is not just about leadership skills and being a "people’s person" §????HRM is not just about employee engagement activities §????HRM is not volunteering, and CSR §????HRM is not just about data proficiency, and hence, AI or predictive analytics are not the only ideas in an HR manager’s toolkit Good luck to the aspirants for the upcoming year! In general, I don't advise folks to pursue #PhD or #FPM at mid-career, if the program is fully funded, one shall give a serious thought... 1. If you are contemplative, read a lot and want to write. This may be a good option. 2. If you have some curiosity, that bugs you. For example: why isn't there a standard recruitment form or CV format - all across India? Such PhD process may help you to figure out the systematic way to fulfill your curiosity. However, word of caution! PhD or FPM is a long process. On paper 4 to 5 years, but good thesis or degree may take even longer. And often there is no tangible ROI on such a long degree program. If this still interests you, go ahead and try. Do you think your child would thoroughly enjoy answering this question? A fisherman and a kingfisher bird are having a heated argument by the bank of the river. In this context, develop and write a story. Visualize & draw the story scenario. If yes, then s/he may have a creative bend of mind and B.Design courses might be one of the good career paths. (Career interests are multidimensional & hence there may be even better paths) This is a sample question from Design Aptitude Test (DAT), conducted for admission to National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and others. The top placement in Jan 2023 cycle was Rs. 28 lakh per annum (As per NID Ahmedabad's annual report). Let's try to find children's natural inclination to take informed career decisions. Opportunities are ample today, but the situation is also volatile! It's difficult to survive in a mis-aligned career path owing to competition & technological disruptions. Let's make informed career decisions for our next generation, who are bubbling with unique potential. Follow Ebenezer Bright for interesting career insights for children & young professionals. ____________________________ PS: I will struggle to answer this question myself, but my strength lies in helping people (social), to find their inner strengths (investigative) and guiding them in their career path through multi-dimensional psychometric assessment. The teaching profession, especially the higher education in India is going through a sad phase. The standard of the University level teachers have tremendously gone down. As well as the students are no more courteous and polite. I will only talk about the Journalism and Mass Communication faculties. Most of these faculties do not have much industrial exposure, are not aware about new forms of Journalism like AI, Robotics etc, are not open minded towards learning and acceptance and are not having much industrial connects. Journalism and Mass Communication is a practical industry. But by merely doing PHD in this field does not authorize these faculties to not let students know about this industry. Believe me... it's scary but the truth of the prevalent time... students are being made jobless and they are not being given entrepreneurial skills by these PHDs Journalism and Mass Communication faculties. Yes, this is sad situation here in India and I believe it is mostly because of the professors themselves. Professors who literally have no knowledge about the subject and are 'teaching' . There are many of them across the country. We really need to rise the standards of the professor in the country so that they can give a better future to our country. Mass Communication has such a wide scope. Every industry needs PR, Advertising, Branding guys. This is the other side of the media industry. But the so-called PHDs who have absolutely no communication skills and personality are spoiling everything. It's high time that the govt should look into this. Professor-of-Practice should have a longer duration and more power in JMC departments.
