This week many of my former Marriott colleagues celebrated 5 years of #MarriottBonvoy. It's hard to believe that it has already been five years but I was happily reminded of how much I enjoyed my Bonvoy work on behalf of W Hotels and of the many lasting friendships that grew from those experiences.
That period of time was an inflection point in my career and one that I've since tried to recreate with varying degrees of success. I don't know exactly what to attribute our collective happiness to but these principles seem to be part of the magic (culture) we created.
1. Surround yourself with only the best. Who are the best? They are subject matter experts, who are passionate about their specific craft, take pride in their role, have a growth mindset, are team players, and value what you do.
2. Everything communicates: Body language, litter, signage, email tone, chaos, order, laughter, smell, silence, uniforms, noise, texture, sound, smiles, beauty, space, design, thank you notes. How you do anything is how you do everything.
3. Celebrate every win proportionally, publicly and privately - this is where the fun is harvested. Learn from your losses proportionally, publicly and privately - this is where the trust is cultivated.
4. Think legend-daringly. If this were a legend how would it be told and how far would you dare to be legendary? Who dares wins!
5. Exit stage left. Create space for others to thrive in your absence. Step off stage, permanently or temporarily, for other actors to evolve the folklore without you.
