I was reflecting on my past year at City Year Orlando as I continue on my career path. Among all the lessons I learned, one stuck out: accountability.
Accountability is so important in the workplace. Receiving criticism and feedback may not be easy to hear, but it is necessary.
There is a reason people of all levels of a workplace should be critiqued—from management all the way to new hires. No one single person should be above it since this is how people, companies, and ideas improve.
When management starts banning criticism, feedback, or even common workplace gossip, the wheels of innovation cease to turn. No one benefits and everyone stagnates. Implementing policies like these only succeed in driving a wedge between organizations and invaluable above-and-beyond people.
This is why it is so important to speak up about issues you see in your workplace. Not only are you addressing an issue, you are actively striving to make the situation better.
After all, we are all in the same boat, why try to sink it? This is what City Year Orlando taught me was important.
I am wishing all of you at City Year Orlando a wonderful year filled with valuable life lessons such as accountability. Never be afraid to speak up about workplace concerns, whether you speak to your higher-ups or even to HR.
There is a way to have these discussions while maintaining a direct yet reasonable approach, and I encourage this.
It is 2024, I am sure we can be professional about it.
