We started a pilot program on Sheppard AFB about a year ago to get Life Coaches in the dorms for Airmen in Training at the 365 TRS to provide an additional resource for those military personnel that may be more vulnerable and susceptible to challenges. We have struggled with engagement and know for a fact that the marketing and leadership support is adequate. I am interested in some of the reasons for underutilization. What do you believe some reasons are? Do you know what a Life Coach provides? What is the demographic for the clients of my Life Coach friends? Is Life Coaching seen as a resource only utilized by an individual that society may deem as successful?

Go the extra mile(s), literally. A distinction of great leaders is going the second mile. Roman law stipulated that a Roman citizen could compel any non-Roman citizen to transport their load the equivalent of a Roman mile (5820.9 ft, 1618 yards or 1478.5 m). Jesus taught his followers to “go the second or extra mile” or “go with him two” (Matthew 5:41). Leaders, who play the role of servant or second-class citizen, elevate their teams through personal service, gratitude, and recognition. Too many leaders today elevate themselves at their followers expense. Great leaders find real ways to go the second mile and elevate their followers. This type of leadership strengthens bonds, fastens loyalty, and challenges new leaders to arise. The first mile is where the obligation is. The second mile is where the opportunity is. It was no coincidence that Ayrissa Schmidt, Anna Vargas, and Sam Bascom presided over my going away festivities when I relinquished command of USS PINCKNEY (DDG 91) in December 2020. These three outstanding young leaders “fleeted up” onboard the ship, meaning they completed both their junior officer tours on the same ship. Everyone onboard benefited from their energy, professionalism, and devotion to mission – especially me, the Captain!? Talent Management comes in many forms – in this case it was “hiring” from within. Organizations are strengthened when there is an internal path for growth and retention. At the same time, it’s important that healthy, achievable paths exist for “outsiders” to join the team and provide diversity in thought and perspective. In other words, I think we need to have our cake and eat it too!
