This is awesome to see. Working as a teen is such a formative experience, and I wish that we placed more emphasis on how much kids learn through these experiences. As the mom of a soon-to-be teen myself, I think about all that we ask of our kids as they contemplate college and the application process. Get A's in school. Take on extra course work. Make the team. Play the instruments(!). Join the clubs. Flourish socially. Volunteer. It's impossible. And often these experiences take up much of the valuable and limited time that could also be spent developing work ethic and an understanding professional norms, gaining independence from both parents and friend groups, and learning how to manage their earnings. I worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time growing up (curtsy). Was I at the top of my class? Nope (don't @ me). But I did learn to find a decent enough job and then work hard to be successful. And Northeastern University only helped me build on these skills. I hope this is a trend that we see continue! Oh - and EVERYONE should be required to work a service job at least once. ??

During a recent community college visit, I was told about a college skills workshop that unexpectedly became a lesson in?friendship. We’ve long relied on the mere exposure effect—the idea that students will organically make friends by being stuck together—but if that ever did work, it sure ain’t working now. Given many students’ social behavior following the pandemic—choosing online coursework, avoiding in-person events, and staying in their room to engage virtually—what can we do to help those who want to make friends?" Only 20.4% of 12th graders expect their work to be highly satisfying—the lowest in history and down 20% since 2013. Renowned author Jean Twenge's research in her book "Generations" suggests our youth is entering the workforce less optimistic about their career. Her book illuminates Gen Z psychographics in the workplace context. The key finding? Gen Z needs more guidance. The vast majority see work as just a paycheck rather than a passionate pursuit involving personal and professional development. Some circles judge Gen Z for differing from millennials or boomers. But before we write off this generation, let's understand each individual's perspective. Many young people don't believe a fulfilling career is possible. What if we showed them it IS? We need to ask the right questions and build an education path aligned with their unique interests, values, and strengths. After completing my studies at the Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis, I am thrilled to delve into the world of social work. It has made me understand how skills are intertwined with humanity to address pressing social issues in our society, grounded in values, equity, and evidence-based practices. I have two points to summarize my study. One key takeaway from my academic journey is the diversity within social work, spanning from direct interactions at the micro level to broader policy considerations at the macro level. Regardless of the layer or approach, the pivotal question remains: "What theories or lens are you using to perceive the specific social issue?" It's fascinating to see how individual perspectives and chosen lenses can shape the strategies employed to tackle social challenges. Another crucial lesson is the interconnecting of organizations in the social work realm, echoing the principles of system theory. Collaboration is essential at all levels to address multifaceted issues comprehensively. Whether providing support to a homeless individual or advocating for policy changes, the synergy among various entities is paramount for practical solutions. Transitioning from a tech and social innovation background to social work, I believe there's immense potential in blending innovation with addressing social issues. My first job as a teenager was when I was 15, I worked the summer as a janitor - waxing floors, scrubbing desks and urinals. ?I wasn’t super excited about cleaning bathrooms, but I did love seeing my name on a paycheck and paying for my own basketball shoes! ????? ?I’ll never forget what that job taught me. ?One lesson I learned was to truly appreciate the often unseen labor that janitors do in afterhours to keep offices, schools, buildings and our streets clean and beautiful. ?I always always make it a point to say “Thank You” directly to the good people who do these jobs everywhere. ?That’s hard work that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. ??? Do you think teens should have a job? I’m definitely encouraging my kids to have teen jobs to learn and grow their skills and employment awareness. ? I think the paycheck math alone is so engaging, relevant and motivating. ? I want my kids to know how to find a job, keep a job (or how to quit if the situation warrants) and negotiate in the economy. Hands on experience beats theory all day. ? Young talent is not a commodity. It's a unique treasure. I lead young and future problem solvers and innovators for my vocation and community engagement. There is a strong stereotype around the people I engage...good at math, bad at people, poor social etiquette, strong sarcasm, good grades and SAT score, etc. What gets forgotten are the unique humans beneath the surface, each with dreams, fears, goals, insecurities, passions, and gifts. On the surface and to the untrained eye, they can all seem the same, like a glass full of ice cubes. To the jaded, all they see is the stereotype. And that's a shame. One of the greatest joys of my job is connecting with each person, learning about them, and then working to help each grow and bloom. It's rewarding work complicated by the variety of humans in the mix. I love it. This is a pic of an ice cube that was floating in my daughter's drink while we were out recently. An ice cube, one of several. If you just glanced, you didn't think anything about the beautiful art floating in the glass. The ice cube was it's own kind of beautiful. You just had to look for it, find it, and see it for what it was. Like talent.

I hope my experience is uncommon. When I listen to teenagers and young adults, too many are afraid of the future, as if it's conspiring against them. How can they reach for the sky and unfold their potential as human beings with this as their sponsoring thought? How can they carve out lives with a sense of excitement and promise about the future—like many of us did—knowing this is the time to enjoy life, experiment and make mistakes, make up their own minds, not carry the world on their shoulders, believe in abundance, and trust all will be well? I had a conversation with a terrific, hard working young woman and man last night who reiterated what I hear too often: "Will my studies pay off and provide a worthy career? I want to work in the arts, but my job will be the first to disappear! Will I ever have the security of my own home? Thank God I have supportive parents to fall back on! Is bringing kids into this world a bad idea? In my heart, I know I want them." In our chat, I asked the young woman how it might feel if it looked a bit different: "Life is an adventure by design, where I'm not meant to have all the answers. My career trajectory might resemble a drunken stagger more than a ladder, but that's a great way to learn about who I am and what I'm good at. I'm saving a little of what I make every week and having a bloody good time with the rest. When I'm ready, I'll start small in the property market—an old studio apartment would be great." She said that made her feel good. Perhaps the world has changed so dramatically that fear of the future is unavoidable, but how can we foster optimism for kids to face the next 80+ years of their lives? I don't mean by demonstrating the extraordinary success stories of a few 'which by the way could be you if you put your mind to it', but by helping them embrace the ordinariness of life with an open mind and open heart, and with excitement about its limitless possibilities. Surely the world would be better off if young adults started out optimistic (even overly), emboldened and passionate, because they're less afraid.
