Developed in collaboration BNP Paribas, Finance for Biodiversity, Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Wildlife Conservation Society, it responds to the growing demand from investors for a comprehensive guidance on impact reporting for biodiversity and nature finance activities to boost transparency and credibility in the market. These metrics can be applied to individual projects for use of proceeds instruments or be aggregated across a portfolio of investments. There is an annual $200 billion gap in biodiversity finance, and most of it will have to come from the private sector.?How do we mobilize private capital to invest in nature finance at scale? From our experience with #greenfinance and #bluefinance, we know that investors need clear, transparent rules of the road to enter new markets.?IFC's first-to-market Biodiversity Finance Reference Guide aimed to help investors and companies identify opportunities to shift to production practices that address the key drivers of biodiversity loss, advance conservation and restoration, and integrate nature-based solutions across sectors. The 'Private Finance and Investments for Nature-Positive' programme, run by Finance for Biodiversity, has been selected for funding under the Global Environment Facility’s Innovation Window. ?? The programme aims to provide tools to financial institutions in order to support alignment of their finance activities and investments with nature-positive outcomes, thereby contributing to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (K-M GBF). This aligns with GEF’s business model innovation and financial innovation categories, demonstrating how private finance can support global biodiversity goals. ?? BBVA Colombia, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has issued the first biodiversity bond in the financial sector, marking a significant milestone in sustainable finance. This innovative bond, totaling $50 million, is dedicated to financing projects that support biodiversity and climate adaptation. ?????????????? ?????? ??????????: The funds raised will support various environmental projects, including: - Reforestation and regeneration of natural forests on degraded lands?? - Mangrove conservation and restoration ? - Climate-smart agriculture?? - Wildlife habitat restoration ?? The initiative is designed to foster sustainable management of natural resources, integrating rigorous eligibility criteria and performance indicators to ensure impactful outcomes. ???????????????????????? ?????? ????????????????: Colombia, recognized as the most biodiverse country per square kilometer globally, is home to 14% of the world's known plant species and about one-third of all bird species (World Bank). The biodiversity bond aligns with Colombia's commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental conservation, as highlighted by its various green finance initiatives and policies aimed at sustainability (World Bank). ?????? ???? ??????????????: With clean energy and decarbonization projects as the most ‘lucrative’ avenue for investments, (Green bonds comprising $575 billion of the $930 billion worth of GSSSB issued in 2023, biodiversity if often overlooked in discussions around sustainable finance. This pioneering bond by BBVA and IFC exemplifies the critical importance of biodiversity and draws attention towards it. A small step, albeit an innovative one, in terms of value, should set the stone for finance towards funding projects catered to protecting the biodiversity. Safeguarding biodiversity while capitalising on the economic potential of natural resources requires robust and innovative financial mechanisms. This shift is particularly pertinent in the Canadian context, where the intersection of vast natural capital and diverse stakeholder interests, including Indigenous communities, demands a nuanced approach to conservation finance. Drawing on insights from recent articles and the comprehensive report by Rally Assets and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, it's evident that the mobilisation of private capital is essential. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's ambitious targets and the significant biodiversity funding gap highlight the urgency for action. For Canada, this means leveraging innovative financial models, such as green bonds, outcome-based financing, and blended finance structures, to attract diverse investment sources. Investors, both domestic and international, must recognise the dual benefit of conservation finance: preserving biodiversity and creating sustainable economic returns. Mechanisms like the Wildlife Conservation Bond, which ties financial returns to conservation outcomes, exemplify how financial products can be designed to incentivise positive environmental impact. The integration of Indigenous knowledge and stewardship, as seen in the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and Guardian Programs, highlights the critical role of Indigenous communities in achieving sustainable conservation outcomes. As investor awareness grows, so too must the commitment to innovative, transparent, and impactful financial products. The success of initiatives like Ocean 14 Capital's blue economy fund and GoodCarbon's nature-based carbon credit platform illustrates the transformative potential of aligning financial incentives with conservation goals. The Canadian context, with its unique challenges and opportunities, stands to benefit immensely from such forward-thinking approaches. The rising tide of investor interest in natural capital is promising for biodiversity conservation. By embracing a multi-faceted approach that includes rigorous measurement, Indigenous engagement, and innovative financial products, Canada can meet its conservation targets and set a global standard for conservation finance.
