I asked a fellow Value Creation team member from another VC, "Hey, what are you up to these days?" His short, flat answer made me ponder the entire day: "I'm busy enriching our portfolio companies." As simple as it sounds, that one line completely changed my perspective and how I approach things. I was so fixated on aspects like BD, Hiring, PR, and community events, all the while forgetting WHY I'm engaging in these activities. My role is intended to generate value or bring dollars to the portfolio companies we've invested in. We assist in hiring key leaders because we understand that poor hiring can cost time and money. We facilitate connections and unlock partnership deals because they contribute to generating revenue. We organize community events so that our portfolio companies can connect with new investors and other founders to synergize along the way. All that we do is aimed at helping our portfolio companies scale and succeed. Being reminded again of WHY I am here as a part of the Value Creation team makes me excited to expand my connections and learn more from all of you. I want to give a shout out to our newest team member Alex Finn ?? Joined 6 months ago and is absolutely crushing new client partnerships and giving his clients the best service they've ever experienced. He's been working across a number of roles (CEO, CMO etc.) but I want to highlight the work he's been doing in GTM roles. The reason: GTM roles are the most in demand in this market, as companies are really pushing for sales and efficient growth and it's CRITICAL that we're hiring the right people for these positions. Alex has taken over multiple searches where the company was previously using a "specialist" search firm but they weren't seeing results. He's actually batting 100%, even on contingent searches where the company could find the person themselves. I think he's 20/20 but I actually have lost count. Hiring a Founding AE ?? lets be honest it's scary! It's not easy to get this hire right. It's not easy to truly understand the skill set you need to hire. It's not easy working out how you identify if a candidate is right for your business. It's not easy sometimes to convince the right candidate to join your business. Hiring the right GTM talent for your business is hard, but it can be made a lot easier and more successful if we truly know- 1.Why are you hiring 2.What does success in the position look like over 18 months(not just revenue) 3.What does failure look like. 3.What skills would you need to achieve our 18 month success plan. 4.Why would you join you. 5.Do you know how to be a sales leader (yes this hire will need a leader) 6.Do you know how to be reward this hire. (you need the right commission plan) 7. Think about personality fit. Last week, I had an interview at 10am with a 23 year old sales rep. He wanted to become CEO. I asked him, "Why do you think a sales manager can become a CEO?" His answer was epic. He said, "Being in sales is about really getting what customers need and fixing what's not clicking for them. It's about making sure my team believes in where we're headed, making our brand pop in a sea of sameness, deciding things on the fly and getting used to hearing 'no' a lot. Pretty much like a CEO, right?" This hit home for me because I started in sales too. Our chat quickly turned from an interview into this awesome back-and-forth, talking about people who kicked off their careers in sales and climbed their way to the top. Like Warren Buffet started out selling stuff door-to-door before running Berkshire Hathaway and turning it into a behemoth with a revenue of $223.6 billion by 2016. Samuel Palmisano began as a sales rep at IBM in 1973 and worked his way up to CEO, leading the company to become the biggest IT giant by 2009. And Howard Schultz, the guy was cold calling for Xerox in the 90s before taking the CEO role at Starbucks and making it what it is today. This really set the tone for my day, proving the best interviews turn into real conversations.
