???Handbook of Digital 3D Reconstruction of Historical Architecture ???Chaired by Jun. Professor and Time Machine Organisation secretary Sander Münster, a network of experts from various research institutions all around Europe recently published this handbook for students, experts and interested parties who want to learn more about digital 3D reconstruction of historical architecture. ???The book provides answers to the core questions of the subject: What is a digital 3D model or a digital 3D reconstruction? How are they created and what are they used for? ???Practical instructions, condensed knowledge, explanations of technical terms and references to example projects, literature and further references provide information of varying density and thus enable an individual introduction to the subject. ???The book combines extensive knowledge on the topic of “digital 3D reconstruction of historical architecture” and provides practical instructions for independent implementation. Up to now, there has been no cross-disciplinary vocabulary for technical terms in this field, so this publication makes a start. ?? https://lnkd.in/dbybi53m

Virginia Tech researchers are helping the dream of a home with a white picket fence get a fresh new face — and a new price tag. With a $1.1 million grant from Virginia Housing, an organization dedicated to providing affordable housing for the commonwealth, experts in Virginia Tech's College of Engineering and the Virginia Tech College of Architecture, Arts, and Design are partnering to build more affordable homes, and they are using a 3D concrete printer to do it. The interdisciplinary team aims to create 10 homes over the next two to three years while laying the groundwork for hundreds more. Read the story ?? https://lnkd.in/eMhEZwV2

A challenge which we all face when teaching "Vernacular Architecture " courses.
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | “Why Are You Not Using Computers? A Case for Drawing Vernacular Architecture by Hand” by Jelena Pejkovi?. “Finally, there is something to be said about drawing by hand as a contemplative, reflective, transformative process for the individual who produces the image. You make the drawing to preserve data and to present the evidence of a historic building. In turn, you learn intricate detail about the object of your interest, both tangibly and intellectually. By the end of this journey, you are a different person than you were when you started – a? person with? more knowledge, more appreciation, and more respect for the world that surrounds you, via the microcosm of the building you were measuring and drawing. The building you draw with this much focused attention becomes etched in your memory, in your real, physical neural pathways. In other words, you make the drawing – but the drawing also makes you.” Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eaKfFYUy #handdrawing #traditionalarchitecture #traditionalbuilding #drawingbyhand #architecturedrawing

This fall semester, the Chair of History and Theory of Urban Design will offer a new version of the core theory course for master's students, History and Theory in Architecture IV. The course is taught by Dr. Cathelijne Nuijsink and subtitled “1990s Theories that Inspired Architecture.” Plunging back in time to the 1990s—a decade characterized by grunge, hip-hop, cell phones, Netscape Navigator, Altavista, Amazon, and famous sitcoms—students will examine how architectural theory opened up to other disciplines in response to a remarkable convergence of technological advancements alongside political and cultural shifts. We will use some of the most thought-provoking thematic issues from the 27 instalments of the journal "ANY: Architecture New York (1993–2000)" as a jumping off point for discussions in order to introduce the non-architectural theories that began to influence architecture in the 1990s. Beyond contextualizing the theories within historical frameworks and analyzing different cultural and disciplinary perspectives that have been applied to them, the course aims to foster an understanding that theories are open to interpretation and reinterpretation across time. We will, of course, also examine a plethora of architectural projects that drew inspiration from these non-architectural theories.
