This one cuts deep. No military spouse truly knows what it means to sign on to military life. You can’t know until you feel the baseline daily uncertainty of waiting for your entire life to change without warning. The ever-present tightness in your throat when your spouse is deployed. The relief of finding a genuine friend. Feeling seen and heard for the first time in a long time. The exhaustion in endless Google searches for accessible houses, doctors, dentists, childcare, jobs, mechanics in place after place after place. The grief of finding a priceless family heirloom cracked in a moving box—again. Tiny things that add up. Things you can push through, overlook, justify. That is, until you can’t. But it’s hard to talk about these things openly for layered reasons. This is a courageous and important project. People talk ABOUT mil spouses a lot. But often it’s them AS spouses. Through their relationship to their significant other’s job. They are in the shadows. This project takes a closer look at mil spouses not just as spouses but as people in their own right. Their own perspectives on their own goals, experiences and hopes. Military spouses are often treated as less important in the military community because they don’t wear a uniform. But while the servicemember is away and spouses pack the house for the PCS, organize the kids and help make ends meet at their job, it’s clear they truly help to keep the mission going.
