After many years of using the Self-Determination Theory in my HR work, I finally decided to pursue a certification through the University of Rochester course available in Coursera. ?? Having attended the International SDT Conference 10 years ago, and having met and conversed with Professor Richard M Ryan a couple of years ago at ITX Corp. offices on the intricacies of SDT and its relationship with feelings of inclusion, makes this accomplishment extra special. All HR professionals (in fact, all managers and, arguably, everybody) would benefit from understanding this foundational theory so that they can make more informed decisions on how to motivate teams. It helps explain and understand when our initiatives are impacting the basic needs articulated by the SDT, and therefore impacting intrinsic motivation. And, of course, it illuminates where our initiatives are NOT striking the right chord and generating undue friction. By the way, this contributes to explaining why the push towards returning to the office work environment is received with such resistance. The way it's being implemented by most companies is very frequently in direct conflict with the satisfaction of basic Autonomy needs. The result? Negative intrinsic motivation, a perceived need for even more extrinsic motivation, and a general feeling of un-wellness. The Self Determination Theory is also a great scaffolding theory for user engagement in Product Management: create a product that enhances Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness, and you'll have intrinsically motivated users who become advocates of your product, as frequently discussed by my dear friend Sean Flaherty. Highly recommend the course! I took it a few years ago and continue to be a student of self determination theory.
