Today in Asia Times, I wrote about the growing concern that the U.S. Air Force lacks the necessary aircraft and budget to match China in a potential air war. The Air Force faces a challenging mix of outdated technology, rising modernization costs, and budget limitations that hinder its ability to develop essential next-generation systems, like advanced fighters, refueling tankers, and drone combat aircraft. U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall stressed that creative restructuring and increased funding are crucial to maintain air dominance against China's rapidly advancing fleet. Meanwhile, China has showcased new fighter technologies, including the carrier-based J-15T and the stealthy J-35A, which signal its growing combat capabilities and ambitions. These aircraft advancements, combined with President Xi's focus on military readiness for a potential conflict over Taiwan, highlight the urgency of U.S. modernization efforts. Analysts remain divided over prioritizing advanced manned fighters or investing in unmanned and space-based systems, underscoring the complexity of maintaining strategic superiority.

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern military aviation, stealth technology has emerged as a game-changing capability, providing a decisive advantage on the battlefield. Among the advanced aircraft that have embraced this transformative technology is the F-15 Silent Eagle, a variant of the renowned F-15 platform designed to incorporate cutting-edge stealth features. At the core of the F-15 Silent Eagle's stealth prowess are its conformal fuel tanks (CFTs). Traditionally, underwing stores have been a significant source of radar reflectivity, but Boeing's innovative design has addressed this challenge by integrating internal weapons bays into the fuselage-hugging conformal fuel tanks that are compatible with many F-15 models.Complementing the CFTs, the F-15 Silent Eagle also features the incorporation of radar-absorbent materials and specialized coatings. These advanced materials and surface treatments work in tandem to minimize the aircraft's radar cross-section, enhancing its ability to evade detection and operate with increased stealth. The combination of these stealth-enhancing technologies, along with the proven capabilities of the F-15 platform, has transformed the Silent Eagle into a formidable asset in modern air warfare. By seamlessly integrating stealth features while maintaining the F-15's renowned performance and versatility, the Silent Eagle represents a significant advancement in the field of military aviation, providing commanders with a powerful and stealthy option for a wide range of mission profiles. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce

Lockheed Martin, under contract to Northrop Grumman for the U.S. Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, has delivered the 75th APY-9 radar that provides the U.S. Navy with information dominance through revolutionary sensor capability. More Hawkeyes have been built and delivered than any other AEW platform in the world. The newest Advanced Hawkeye variant is at the forefront of technological capability, due in large part to Lockheed Martin’s APY-9 radar. The Northrop Grumman-built E-2 has come to be known as the U.S. Navy’s “eyes of the fleet” because of its ability to simultaneously watch over air, land and sea. Any time a Navy carrier has aircraft airborne, there is an APY-9 radar at work, guarding the United States and its allies. The U.S. Navy has funded 80 out of 86 aircraft in the current program of record. Japan has purchased 18 E-2D Hawkeyes and France has purchased three. “As the primary sensor for the E-2D, the APY-9 radar has a long legacy of providing agile deterrence for enhanced 21st century security,” stated Chandra Marshall, vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Radar & Sensor Systems business. “Our primary focus is to bring our military men and women home safely, and the APY-9 sets that bar for all other AEW radars.” #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gjWEmzS2

The Lockheed D-21 is a highly advanced, remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) designed to carry out high-speed, high-altitude strategic reconnaissance missions. Initially designed to be launched from the back of an A-12 carrier aircraft, the D-21 was capable of reaching speeds in excess of Mach 3.3 at an operational altitude of 90,000 feet. Development of the D-21 began in October 1962, with the drone originally known by the Lockheed designation Q-12. The D-21 was intended for reconnaissance deep into enemy airspace, carrying a single high-resolution photographic camera over a preprogrammed path. After completing its mission, the drone would release the camera module into the air for retrieval, and then self-destruct. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce

Boeing's is trying to penetrate the NATO market and get #France to consider the P-8 Poseidon as a replacement for its aging Atlantique 2 (ATL2) maritime patrol aircraft (#MPA) fleet. Despite France's apparent commitment to working with European firms like Airbus and Dassault Aviation on developing a next-generation MPA, Boeing believes the P-8 could be a cost-effective alternative. The company cites its previous collaborations with local manufacturers in Germany as an example of how it could work with French suppliers. Key points: 1. France awarded contracts to Airbus and Dassault for architecture studies of a future MPA based on their A320neo and Falcon 10X aircraft. 2. The status of the joint Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) effort with Germany is unclear. 3. Boeing argues that developing an indigenous MPA could be expensive, citing the $7 billion spent by the US Navy on P-8 development. 4. Germany has ordered 60 CH-47F Chinook helicopters and 8 P-8 aircraft, with the first P-8 expected to be delivered next year. 5. The P-8 is also a potential solution for replacing Denmark's CL-604 Challenger aircraft. 6. Boeing plans to hold discussions with customers about the T-7 trainer and F-15EX at the Berlin Air Show.
Boeing urges France not to 'discount' P-8 as it plots ATL2 replacement - Breaking Defense

On October 11, 1990, the Rockwell-MBB X-31 made its first flight, marking a significant milestone in the testing of fighter thrust vectoring technology. Developed under the Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability (EFM) program, this innovative aircraft aimed to provide additional control authority in both pitch and yaw. Its advanced flight control system enabled controlled flight at high angles of attack (AOA), enhancing maneuverability during combat scenarios. Two X-31 aircraft were built, showcasing the potential of thrust vectoring to revolutionize aerial combat. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce #pilots #engineering

Today in Asia Times, I wrote about Anduril's new Barracuda Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV), designed to help rebuild the depleted US missile stockpile. This low-cost, mass-producible system boasts flexibility and scalability, ideal for various military missions across platforms like fighter jets and naval vessels. With its modular design, Barracuda leverages commercially sourced components, making it cheaper and quicker to produce than existing cruise missiles, offering a much-needed boost to America’s defense capabilities. I also addressed the significant challenges the US faces in ramping up munitions production domestically and through allies. Bottlenecks include long lead times, workforce shortages, and reliance on single-source components like rocket motors. Furthermore, export regulations and complex supply chains hinder allied countries, such as Japan and South Korea, from producing US-origin munitions efficiently, adding layers of bureaucracy and delaying production at a time when speed is critical.
