This year's community engagement activities have been invaluable, emphasising small gatherings and informal meet-ups. Sustainable funeral tours, cemetery litter-picking, and art-centric opportunities have provided engaging and unique learning experiences, promoting common unity within our community. Art's Impact on Our Work: An example of how art has influenced our work comes from questioning the status of broken and discarded items in cemeteries. Surprisingly, the term 'cemetery litter' appears outside the 63 meanings listed in the Oxford English Dictionary (viewed on 7 December 2023). In cemeteries managed by the Sunshine Coast Council, a pressing issue emerges—the unsustainable and disrespectful use of plastic produce markers as interim grave markers. These laminated labels easily break free, becoming unintended fragments scattered throughout the cemetery. Turning a Challenge into Art: My response to this challenge involves collecting these labels for an upcoming artwork. It's striking that while a majority of Australians express a desire to die at home, less than 10% realise this preference, with most facing their final moments in a hospital. This stark contrast prompts crucial inquiries into honouring individual choices, understanding family preferences and doctor recommendations, and addressing the availability of services. A Thought-Provoking Display: In light of these considerations, the labels I've gathered find a unique display on an unmade bed at home.
