?? Technique #15 of 18: How Am I Supposed to Do That?—Shift the Burden with a Calibrated Question In the last post, we explored The Ackerman Model, a structured approach for making offers and counteroffers. Now, let’s look at How Am I Supposed to Do That?, a calibrated question that allows you to politely reject an unreasonable request while shifting the burden of problem-solving back to the other party. Why “How Am I Supposed to Do That?” Works: This question gives you a way to say “no” without actually saying it. Instead of shutting down the conversation, you encourage the other party to rethink their position and come up with a more reasonable solution. It’s a non-confrontational way to handle difficult demands while keeping the negotiation open. ?? How to Use “How Am I Supposed to Do That?” in Recruiting: Here’s how you can apply this calibrated question with both candidates and hiring managers: With Candidates: When a candidate demands a higher salary than the company can offer, use this question to shift the focus back to them: ? “I understand that you’re looking for more, but how am I supposed to offer that given the company’s current salary structure?” (This encourages the candidate to consider the company’s constraints and opens the door for creative compromises.) With Hiring Managers: If a hiring manager is pushing for a tight deadline or an unrealistic set of requirements, use this question to highlight the challenge: ? “I know you need this role filled quickly, but how am I supposed to find the right candidate within such a short timeframe?” (This allows the manager to reconsider the timeline or be more flexible in their expectations.) Pro Tip: Don’t rush to provide solutions right away after asking this question. Let the other party sit with it and propose their own adjustments, keeping the conversation collaborative. ?? ?? Technique #18 of 18: Negotiation as a Whole—Integrating All Techniques for Ultimate Success In the last post, we explored Black Swans, the hidden factors that can shift negotiations. Now, let’s tie everything together by reflecting on how these 18 techniques work in harmony to elevate your recruiting game and improve your negotiation outcomes. Why Viewing Negotiation as a Whole Works: Each technique we’ve covered plays a specific role, but when integrated, they create a comprehensive approach to negotiation. From Tactical Empathy to The Ackerman Model, and from Calibrated Questions to The Rule of Three, these methods work together to build trust, reduce friction, and achieve better outcomes for both parties. The key is knowing when to apply each one and how they complement each other in a fluid negotiation process. ?? How to Integrate These Techniques in Recruiting: Here’s how you can combine these techniques to create a powerful negotiation strategy: With Candidates: Use Tactical Empathy to understand their needs, Calibrated Questions to uncover concerns, and Loss Aversion to motivate action. Pair this with Mirroring and Dynamic Silence to encourage deeper conversations and gain valuable insights. “It seems like career growth is important to you. What would make this role feel like a strong fit for your long-term goals?” (This approach makes the candidate feel heard and understood, while keeping the conversation focused on solutions.) With Hiring Managers: Start with The Rule of Three to lock in agreement, use Accusation Audits to address concerns upfront, and apply The Ackerman Model to strategically negotiate compensation packages. Always be on the lookout for Black Swans—those hidden factors that could change the negotiation’s direction. “Based on everything we’ve discussed, do you feel confident that this candidate meets your leadership expectations?” (This reinforces commitment and ensures alignment with the hiring manager’s priorities.) Pro Tip: Practice is key. The more you use these techniques in real negotiations, the more natural they’ll become. Over time, you’ll be able to navigate complex conversations with confidence and achieve better outcomes consistently. ?? Thank you for following this 18-part series! By mastering these techniques, you’re now equipped to transform your recruiting negotiations and drive success in every conversation.
