The Merchants Academy is proud to introduce the Skills4Success project! This transformative initiative is a comprehensive skills training programme that empowers unemployed youth with the essential skills to confidently enter the workforce and build meaningful careers. The three-year project, launched in partnership with the Jobs Fund, is set to make a significant impact by providing skills training to at least 3,000 unemployed youth across Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Umhlanga. At the heart of this initiative is one of our core principles: "Our communities are our people." The Skills4Success project embodies our unwavering commitment to uplifting and investing in the communities we serve. I was among the few believing that volunteering is a mere waste of time and energy until I joined the webinar on "Skill Building Through Volunteerism": Personal and Professional Growth, by Dr Ishioma Elora Onah and I learned that; ? Volunteerism means giving your time and effort to help others, without expecting payment or reward. ? Volunteerism can be a valuable way to build skills, including soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, as well as hard skills like programming, data analysis, and software development. ? Volunteering can provide hands-on experience, exposure to new technologies and tools, and opportunities to work on real-world projects. ? Here are the top 5 soft skills I've found matter most when working in NGOS ?? Communication - That this is a critical skill in any field of work goes without saying. However, it is much more so in the NGO world. When collaborating with cross departmental teams, sometimes with external entities like government agencies and implementing partners, you cannot afford to not be on top of your comms skills. ?? Integrity - heh this one is crucial. It was when I entered the NGO world that I learnt that a donor can pull program funding in an instant and without notice at the slightest whiff of dishonesty - intentional or otherwise. This is why NGOs hold such high standards while hiring. Slight discrepancies with data and reporting could make a difference to thousands or millions of lives. ?? Resilience - Take as much of this as you can if you'll be working with NGOs. The kind that can only be built by putting yourself in situations that challenge you. From the pressure that comes with short deadlines and multiple projects running concurrently, to working in remote areas with local communities and language barriers, your limits are going to be tested repeatedly. And you will grow exponentially. ?? Attention to detail - Most NGO programs run periodically. It could be 1yr, 2yrs, 3yrs-5yrs. What this means that at the end of every grant period, the donor reviews the funds utilization and achievement of targets set before making the decision whether to continue with funding. The data provided by the implementing partner is a key driver of this decision. Therefore if the data is inaccurate or embellished ?? then you can guess what happens. It's therefore crucial for M&E staff to enter data accurately and in line with the established SOPs. ?? Patience - James 1:2-4 "Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way." #thatNGObabe

Merry Christmas and happy new year 2025 in advance. 2024 proved that impact happens at the intersection of data and human connection. From analyzing training data across 10 states to sitting with youth participants hearing their stories firsthand, this year taught me that the most meaningful insights come when we combine rigorous measurement with real human experiences. Key milestones that shaped our impact: ? Conducted endline evaluations across multiple states for Jobberman's 5-year soft skills training project, reaching thousands of youth ? Led capacity building sessions for partners and support teams across Nigeria ? Developed the MERL Fellowship Program to strengthen our M&E volunteer network ? Received recognition from Benue State M&E volunteers for contributions to youth development as well as an award for Courage as a Jobber Champ from Jobberman Nigeria ? ?I’m thrilled to announce that I have completed an intensive one-week onboarding program for national service personnel, cohort 2024/2025 at Absa Bank Ghana. This one-week induction period has provided us with the knowledge to navigate life at Absa Bank Ghana, in order to make us as efficient as possible in our work.
