Last week our Chief Clinical Officer, Melissa Lunardini, PhD, MA, MBA, FT attended the European Grief Conference 2024 in Dublin! The gathering brought together experts from 30+ countries, united by our commitment to advancing bereavement care. The conference uniquely centered on Samar Aoun et al's., four-tiered public health model for bereavement care, providing a comprehensive framework for aligning policy, practice, funding, and research initiatives across nations. We proudly presented our Help Texts program (Tier 2 intervention) highlighting the work of our UK partner Sue Ryder. Their commitment to providing free text-based support throughout the UK has generated compelling data showing the effectiveness of text-based bereavement support services. A highlight was connecting with brilliant colleagues including Liz Gleeson, Wendy Lichtenthal, Mary-Frances O'Connor, Clare Killikelly, Susan Cadell, Jacqueline Gunn, Robyn Minty, Lonneke Lenferink, Martin Lytje, Maarten Eisma, Paul Boelen, Thomas Mackrill, Dr Monika Wieliczko, fiona tuomey, Willi P. Heuse, Jennifer Moran Stritch, Hannah Candela, Danai Papadatou, and many other inspiring researchers and practitioners working to advance grief support globally. We are looking forward to the 3rd annual #EGC in Porto, Portugal (2026) as we continue building this vital international community. #bereavement #policy #research #practice #grief

At the European Association for Palliative Care World Research Congress in Barcelona last week, Torsten Schwalbach presented a poster on "A mixed-methods systematic review of bereavement support in palliative care: One size does not fit all". The poster focuses on the importance of supporting families during death, dying, and bereavement as an essential element of specialized palliative care. The current state of evidence on family support and its impact on bereavement outcomes in adult palliative care remains insufficiently understood. The aim was to synthesize evidence around the impact of end-of-life and bereavement support on post-loss coping and wellbeing, and perceptions around its usefulness and benefits. The review found that interventions are generally beneficial but need to be tailored to individual needs. ? #EAPC2024 #PalliativeCare #BereavementSupport #EndOfLifeCare #FamilySupport #HealthcareResearch #uzh Torsten Schwalbach, Lotte Germans-Verweij, David Blum, Rahel Naef

For the past few months I’ve returned my focus to offering spiritual and creative care. It’s been a delight! Unfortunately, this work has often been unpaid or underpaid. I know that organizers, harm reductionists, queers, and others deserve support in these trying times, no matter their budget. So I’ve always offered free and low cost options. I’d hoped it would even out with the pay-it-forward option, but that sadly hasn’t been the case. So I'm betting on myself and my community and launching a Patreon to support this work. Will you join??patreon.com/Femminary Examples of the work you'd be supporting: * Grief Consultations with Harm Reduction Agencies * Free & Low Cost Supportive Writing Workshops for Organizers, Harm Reductionists, and Clergy * Continued growth of Deal Us In: A Deck of Solutions to Guide Opioid Settlement Spending * Harm Reduction Education for Clergy & People of Faith My goal is to get to 40 members by my 40th birthday. Can you help me get there?

The final report from the Better End of Life Programme, funded by Marie Curie, was published today! This is the largest nationally representative post-bereavement survey in England and Wales since 2015, and something I've worked with since joining Cicely Saunders Institute at King's College London. The report demonstrates that many people are unable to access the joined-up care and support they and their family carers need at the end of life, with knock-on effects on symptom management and bereavement outcomes. Care services are over-stretched and many family carers take on significant care and coordination roles despite little?support. Report and policy briefings available here: https://lnkd.in/eyiBnpwh

Every year, people around the UK use Dying Matters Awareness Week as a moment to encourage all communities to get talking in whatever way, shape or form works for them. This year’s theme, ‘The way we talk about Dying Matters’, focuses on the language that we use, and conversations we have, around death and dying – specifically between healthcare professionals and patients, their carers and their families The way we talk about dying: Honest, timely conversations about death and dying are essential to good end of life care. Yet all too often barriers, including lack of confidence, taboos around discussing death, and confusion about who should be having these conversations mean patients, carers and families may not understand what is happening, or get all the information and support they need. 57% of employees will have experienced a bereavement in the last five years and every day, more than 600 people quit work to look after older and disabled relatives. And yet, fewer than one in five managers feel very confident supporting someone they manage with a bereavement. End of life courses with #impact Here at Impact, we offer an EOL training course, including the following topics: - Describe different perspectives of death and dying - Identify local and national policy and principles of end-of-life care - Describe how to recognise when someone is dying - Explain the principles of Advance Care Planning - Demonstrate the elements of key communication skills, how to respond to difficult questions, and grief. - Describe how to access and provide support to individuals and key people during end-of-life care Visit our collection page to keep up to date with new course dates - https://lnkd.in/dgct8M_S #Endoflifecare #dyingmatters #dyingmattersweek #impact #socialcare
