??How can we communicate with a deaf person? ????♀? As a healthcare providers, we must effectively communicate with the deaf community by learning their sign language. Sign language is a basic language that communicates using finger and lip gestures. It may be easier than learning a language; even if you are not proficient in the motions, all you need to do is focus on making your lip movements clear and designing new gestures that represent the information you want to convey to the deaf person in a simple and understandable manner. Definitely, you cannot grasp sign language in a single class, but you must understand the importance of studying it. That's what I aimed to do by attending a session on "Sign language and medicine" with Reham Allouzi. As hearing impaired myself I know too well how hard it is to communicate in the hearing world. I have been using BSL British Sign Language for well over 20 years, I now use it as a tool to help profoundly deaf and other BSL users to explain and reassure them about pests in and around their properties let alone remove and fix the problem. The story recalls:? ?? A d/Deaf patient missed vital information because a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter wasn’t available. Without family support, they were left without understanding important health updates.? ?? A Polish-speaking patient in mental health care couldn’t always access a translator, raising serious concerns about her treatment. Richard Platt, chair of the Ipswich deaf Children’s society, explained: “Most of the time, we leave appointments with no idea what was said and therefore no awareness of the plans ahead.”? This situation is unacceptable, but as HEALTHWATCH SUFFOLK C.I.C. CEO Andy Yacoub says, “change is possible”.?
