Over 100/200/500 applicants on the job posting. Should you apply? I will share real numbers on the 3 last roles I was hiring for. In June, I posted 3 jobs on Linkedin: - Senior UX Designer, US-remote - Staff Product Designer, Europe-remote - Product Design Director,? US-remote I received 400+ applications in the first days of posting these roles. The numbers are in the carousel ?? ………............................... My friends and candidates keep saying: “There are so many applicants for this role already, I don’t think I should apply” In fact, on average 85% of the resumes do not pass the minimum requirements bar. Out of the remaining 15%, most won’t qualify either. With design roles, it’s usually about the portfolio. ………............................... If I were to start a UX team at a small company (again)—now that I’ve worked at Fortune 50 companies—I’d do one thing very different. I’d match the job titles and role criteria I’ve seen large companies use. Calling a player/coach with 2 direct reports a “Director” or “VP” or an IC designer with 2-3 years experience capable of being the solo designer a project a “senior” is doing those people and the company a disservice. You might not need a Lead, Principal, Director, or VP yet. That’s ok. But being clear on what level person you need AND the criteria/experience that justifies someone at that level (and the corresponding pay) is crucial as companies scale and as individuals move on to other companies. An elevated title isn’t a “benefit”. It can actually be a major setback. To both companies and individuals. A “Director” at a Fortune 50 company shouldn’t have different experience criteria than a startup. If you are a startup that is hiring their first designer or design leader and doesn’t know how to hire for the appropriate role, reach out. I can help. Hiring the Right Talent Matters As a tech company, we rely on talented individuals to contribute to the growth and success of the organization. Unfortunately, not every hire is the right fit. Recently, I hired a UI/UX designer Intern, assigned him specific tasks, and expected timely results. When he struggled to complete the work, he left the office without any notice. A few days later, he requested payment for 15 days of work. When I asked for task reports and knowledge transfer to ensure continuity, he refused. Now, he’s spreading false information about our company. This is a reminder to all employers:?be cautious about who you bring into your organization. It’s crucial to hire people who not only have the right skills but also take responsibility for their work. Let’s stay vigilant and ensure we’re building teams with integrity and accountability.
