Over our 25-year history we have designed 28 homes in the San Juan Islands, with 18 of them realized to date. We approach our work with a deep sensitivity to island ecosystems, informed greatly by principal Joe Herrin’s long connection to the islands. Joe has been a donor and volunteer to the?San Juan Preservation Trust?for over 20 years and is currently a candidate for its board of trustees. Founded in 1979, the Trust has over the years protected more than 18,000 acres of biologically diverse land on 22 islands within the archipelago. States across the Southeast U.S. are focusing on initiatives to increase their inventory of speed-to-market ready land for economic development. Focusing on acquiring and certifying new properties is a key part of this strategy. Often overlooked is the unique advantages that brownfields have to offer as part of this strategy. I am looking forward to presenting, "The Role of Brownfields in Economic Development" as part of the Alabama Brownfields Association's Education Series tomorrow, August 8 from 12 pm-1 pm CDT. #burrforman #economicdevelopment #brownfields #madeinalabama https://lnkd.in/eGddNVyd

Not sure what the I&M Canal National Heritage Area is exactly? Here's an explanation. Also gives you insight into what I've been working on over the last 28+ years...
The I&M Canal National Heritage Area turns FORTY on Aug. 24... But, what is the I&MCNHA? ?? Well, first there was the I&M Canal, a 96-mile hand-dug canal that opened in 1848 and connected the Illinois River to Lake Michigan. The canal was the final link needed to complete an all-water route that ran from the East Coast through the Great Lakes down to the Gulf of Mexico. That route led to extensive growth in the region, including transforming Chicago from a swamp town into a metropolis. In 1984, Congress and President Ronald Reagan recognized the need to develop a "new kind of national park" that promoted the culture, heritage and economic development of a region that wasn't necessarily on federally owned land. The FIRST of these "national heritage areas" was ours, which supports 5 counties and 60 communities (862 square miles in all) that owe their growth to the canal. The I&MCNHA is marked in blue on the map. The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) is the nonprofit, coordinating agency that has been given authorization by Congress and works closely with the National Park Service to oversee the I&M Canal National Heritage Area. In this capacity, the CCA has developed the I&M Canal Visitors Center, I&M Canal Boat Tours, numerous events and programming throughout the year and even this social media channel. ?? Here's the link to the Rosalie Edge story:
In case you missed it in our newsletter, here's the epic story of Rosalie Edge, a woman The New Yorker called "the only honest, unselfish, indomitable hellcat in the history of conservation.” You may have never heard of Edge, her contributions to conservation in Yellowstone, and her nonprofit Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association. Now you have, courtesy of this excellent historical feature story by MoJo contributor John Clayton. Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/g5b3vXez

The vast majority of people care about the Great Barrier Reef. Surveys showed 86% of Australians were proud that the Great Barrier Reef is a World Heritage Area, and most agreed that it was the responsibility of all Australians to protect it (81%) (JCU 2016). Did you know people are generally more philanthropic toward the end of their lives, when they tend to have more savings, time, and motivation to help others. (Giving peaks at?ages 61-75, when 77 percent of households donate, compared to just over 60 percent among households headed by someone 26-45 years old.). A smart move is to share with peak individuals Jonathan Womersley John Tanzer Lachlan Wilkinson Patrice Brown Paul Hardisty Ove Hoegh-Guldberg Bill Haylock Simon Molesworth AO, KC Tor Hundloe Russell Reichelt and encouraging them to make a gift and encourage others. JCU 2016 Survey shows Aussies’ love and concern for their Great Barrier Reef https://lnkd.in/gZDHRncP. DAY 6- the final individual action is to 'Give time and money to things you care about' with Paul Hardisty. We support MOUA / Museum of Underwater Art, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Reef Check Australia, Great Barrier Reef Foundation, iNaturalist, Citizens of the Reef, Reef Restoration Foundation, Australian Citizen Science Association, MangroveWatch, Reef Life Survey, Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and many other NFPs and social enterprises that are helping with time and money through collaborations and projects because we care. Today I ask these organisations who they support and who supports them how to show the importance linkages of community, business and our planet.

Have you ever considered the profound impact of preserving history for future generations? ??? As a passionate Rotarian and the Grant Chair for my club, I've been deeply involved in a project that's close to my heart. We're on a mission to help the Elizabethtown Historical Society with much-needed repairs to their building—a cornerstone of our community's heritage. The wear and tear of time don't just affect us individually; they also touch the places that hold our collective memories. The Elizabethtown Historical Society has been a custodian of our past, but now it's our turn to ensure its future. Writing a district grant proposal is more than just a formal request for funds. It's a narrative that weaves together the importance of history, the urgency of preservation, and the community's role in safeguarding our shared stories. Here are some key points I'm considering for the proposal: 1. The significance of the historical society to our community. 2. The specific repairs needed and their costs. 3. The long-term benefits of preserving the building for educational and cultural enrichment. I believe that by supporting these repairs, we're not just fixing a structure; we're restoring a treasure trove of knowledge and a beacon for community engagement. If you've been involved in similar projects or have insights to share, I'd love to hear your experiences. Your input could be invaluable in strengthening our proposal and ensuring the success of this endeavor. Let's come together to protect the legacies that shape our identity. Like this post, share your thoughts, or tag someone who understands the importance of preserving our history. Your engagement can make a real difference! #Preservation #CommunityImpact #RotaryProjects
