Show, Don't Tell! When Bukola and Ada set-up KOADA, a start-up Prosthetics and Orthotics that caters to the need of people who require artificial legs, arms braces and splints, it was a vision driven largely by passion and the need to solve real life issues that enables people with physical impairment or functional limitations stay productive and live independently. With both of them also sharing similar experiences regarding their siblings with limited mobility due to car accidents, it was a social cause with a business intent. Armed with degrees and certifications, an excellent business model, a two-years start-up experience and a business scalability plan, both founders went from fast-burning flames of passion and excitement to the reality of the need to raise capital to expand their operations. It became apparent that attracting investors was not just a one-off go to market approach, but a creative, deliberate and consistent actions of showcasing the progress of the business in its 24 months existence. It was about data as much as curating the stories. After several proposals to venture capitalist, meetings with angel investors and other commercial funders, Bukola and Ada realized that they were amongst the several early-stage start-ups winking in the dark. Prospective investors queried their limited visibility and zero share of voice in the market amongst many other shortfalls. As potential funders turned down their proposals and overtures. KOADA decided to leverage a "pull strategy" by focusing on building credibility where competence and expertise is on display and the overall impact of their performance accessible to stakeholders and everyday people. KOADA hired a PR Agency with the brief to ensure visibility and influence of the brand in the market. The show, don’t tell approach eventually got KOADA their first seed fund – a 5 million dollar investment and an international partnership with the foremost Prosthetics and Orthotics in Europe. The rest they say is history has the business has grown to five Africa countries and two European hubs.
