Despite many efforts at beach cleanups, public education campaigns and the plastic ban, Jamaican coastlines remain littered with carelessly discarded waste, often various forms of plastic. As a result, the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) decided to embark on a thorough reassessment of the situation, identifying critical gaps and proposing actionable recommendations. The study was done as part of a larger project funded by the UNDP implemented Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP). ?? The study highlights that Jamaica’s plastic problem will not be effectively addressed until a comprehensive solid waste management policy aimed at viewing solid waste management as a part of a 'circular economy’ is developed and implemented that includes measures with the following objectives:? - Sustainable financing for solid waste collection and disposal.? - Support the minimization of plastic waste and diversion of plastic waste from disposal sites e.g., waste separation, recycling and reuse systems. - Improve the public’s behavioural attitudes towards littering and consumption of single-use plastics. ? A survey has revealed concerns about a green skills gap in the waste and resources sector, which is set to treble in staffing in less than a decade. The survey, from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the Environmental Services Association, Groundwork, and the Environmental Services and Solutions Expo gathered data from 1,498 professionals from across environmental services. Over half of respondents expressed the view that UK businesses are unprepared for the transition to a sustainable future. ?? The Environment Agency is launching a waste charges consultation, starting today. ?? The purpose of the consultation is to allow the waste, water, and farming sectors to have their say on charges associated with waste activities. ?? The 10-week consultation proposes to introduce new regulatory charges for specific waste activities, as well as update existing charging regimes from April 2025. This will allow The Environment Agency to crack down on increasing illegal waste activities, which are undercutting legitimate waste businesses. ?? England’s waste management industry generates nearly ￡7 billion annually and is continuing to expand. The review will hopefully see more investment in The Environment Agency's services, allowing them to meet the growing demands of the sector.
