Pop quiz: how can you find your dream job / dream client? TLDR: positive vibe checks and no #twinning. I just went to a CreativeMornings at Wacom and was totally inspired by Britt Howard of Portland Garment Factory. She was spitting ideas like a soda, bubbling frothy and fun energy that was as effective as caffeine and sugar ?? . She mentioned how she really wanted to work with companies that were outside her echo chamber, as that's where the needle is going to move on issues close to her heart. And I loved that. Why? Because I think it's SO easy to stay with what's easy. What's comfortable. But true growth comes from being uncomfortable. Trying something new. Expanding your self-imposed boundaries. It's one of the reasons I adore working with multiple agencies* (intros below). Because I get exposed to different personalities, ways of working, industries, and skills. At 45, I'm am 100% still learning and it's why I'm not bored despite being a copywriter going on two decades now! Whether you're looking to work for a company or hire one, whether you're a solo or entrepreneur or working for a corporate behemoth, getting along is foundational. Do they pass this pop quiz: 1. passes your vibe check (comfort) 2. pushes your boundaries (discomfort)? But isn't that contrary? ?? How can you get both? Quick answer: don't hire a mirror. You don't want to work in or with an echo chamber. Take the job or hire the company based on how you can GROW. ?? So we're not twinning ?? , we're learning. Pick a person or place that who compliments you. Someone who lifts you up. Whose strengths allow you to launch yourself to the next level. They can and should be better at some things than you. Let others shine. ?? It only makes you brighter. ?? --- These are the three Portland agencies I work with the most frequently: Murmur Creative - focused in the food ?? realm, they are the perfect combination of talented and effective, producing comprehensive branding that impacts. SBD Agency - with a lock on home ?? and design, they're creative and kind, crafting gorgeous visuals supported by strong content (ahem - that's me!) all the while being super relationship focused. Upswept Creative - self described online marketing ?? nerds, these people keep it real with authentic talk, well planned strategies, and consistent concrete output. They ALL pass the vibe check ?? . I *really* enjoy working with EACH of these agencies.

I was just talking with my colleague about challenge of scheduling meetings for volunteer organizations. Please weigh in and tell me whether you think it's better to have regular meetings that are always at the same time and the same day, no matter who can attend or if you should be flexible about availability. In either case, someone who may not be able to attend can now watch a recorded session but when do you cancel the meeting or move the time based on who will be available? How do you determine when the contributions of live meetings are lost because of low attendance?

Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of working with a group of dedicated community leaders. Our topic of discussion was around volunteerism, focusing on what organizations can do to attract and retain volunteers. Here are some of the tips I shared. 1. Be organized and ready when people show up to volunteer. 2. Craft a positive experience for your volunteers. 3. Work on your internal issues. If there is disconnect or chaos around your board table, it will be felt by others. 4. Think outside the bubble. It’s easy to get caught up in our own circle of influence. 5. Tell people what you do and why. It’s highly likely that people aren’t even sure what your organization is all about. 6. Make it super easy for people to sign up to volunteer. And get back to them in a timely fashion. 7. Be respectful and appreciative of your volunteers and the time they contribute to your organization. What else would you add to the list? Please share below. *** If your community organizations are struggling to attract and retain volunteers, hosting an interacting workshop like this is highly valuable. I’m now booking in person and virtual workshops for late summer/early fall. Let’s have a conversation about options that could work for you.

Breaking news: tomorrow Friday May 10 at 1 PM PDT (4 PM EDT), we are having our inaugural "Corporate Giving Chat Fest". While we hope to do these in person in the future, the event tomorrow will be virtual. It's free and all we do for one hour is talk about anything and everything Corporate Giving, Sponsorships, Employee Volunteerism, Corporate Foundations etc etc. Join us. Here's the link. https://lnkd.in/gZ4kt3CQ Just two rules: 1. you share your name and organization and 2.) you participate by asking questions, sharing your experiences which means we can see your smiling face. See you tomorrow and for those on the east coast, I bet there's a cold beer or glass of wine that you'd like to bring to the meeting. :) It's almost 5 o'clock.
