Net Zero is as much about good data management as it is about reductions. When engaging with clients on reducing their emissions, step 1 is almost always a series of questions around: 1) How do we get data for <insert Scope 3 category>? 2) What assumptions and best guesses might we have to make when the data isn't a direct measure, but a proxy; and perhaps isn't even measured precisely beyond ￡ spent? 3) What emissions factor can or should we marry this data to?! 4) How will our assumptions affect the actions a customer my take on this issue? e.g., if we are conservative, might they prioritise other emissions? For example, a client I'm working with currently sells a product that customers chill before selling. We don't have direct data on how long for or what energy use is consumed in the chillers; what we do have is product size & number of units sold, and publicly available data on chiller loads. It's likely to be a significant part of their footprint but with a big dose of uncertainty. The outcome is that carbon reports need to not just provide a number but provide context in terms of assumptions and data quality so that clients can make informed decisions on carbon reduction; and can attempt to improve data collection going forward. So, carbon reporting isn't a case of 'lies, damned lies and statistics', but more a case of 'Known unknowns'!!

Let's face it: relying on carriers to provide accurate and timely emissions data is like building a house on quicksand. Their data is unreliable, full of gaps, inconsistent, and delayed, making it impossible to develop effective decarbonization strategies. Here's why carrier data will never be enough: ?? Data Circus: Carrier-supplied emissions data is often supplied in spreadsheets or feeds- using hundreds of non-normalized calculation methods and, making it nearly impossible to aggregate and analyze. ?? Inconsistent Metrics: Different carriers use different methodologies and calculations, making comparisons and benchmarking impossible. ? Data Delays: Outdated data means you're flying blind when making critical decarbonization decisions. Carrier-supplied data might be weekly or semi-annually, and anything in between. ?? Upstream & Downstream Disconnect: Unnormalized data from carrier to carrier creates an impossible data set to clean and use. Upstream carrier data will not mirror downstream data, and hub transfer activities are almost always lost in the reporting chain.
