Artificial intelligence (AI) is making waves in medical research, unlocking new possibilities for detecting deadly diseases early and efficiently. From pinpointing rare cancers to streamlining infection diagnosis, AI is proving to be a game-changer in healthcare innovation. In a recent report by the?BBC, it was outlined that ovarian cancer is often called “rare, underfunded, and deadly,” according to Audra Moran, head of the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (Ocra), as she explained to?Pádraig Belton, BBC reporter. Detecting it early is critical, but challenging according to the news outlet. Most cases begin in the fallopian tubes, and by the time symptoms appear, the cancer may have already spread.

I'm thrilled to share our latest publication:?"Systemic and Procedural Challenges in Transitioning Patients with Cancer to Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Facilities: A Prospective Mixed-Methods Study"? Co-authored with?Oisharya?Dasgupta,?Dr. Nabiel Mir,?Kunal?Desai, and explores critical gaps in care transitions for cancer patients moving from acute care to PALTC facilities. Our study highlights: ??Medication reconciliation and appointment challenges ?? Barriers like?poor communication &?documentation challenges ?? Opportunities to improve outcomes through tailored interventions like better EHR integration, structured transfer protocols, and enhanced communication pathways With the growing complexities in cancer care, these findings emphasize the urgent need for systemic reforms to enhance transitions and support this vulnerable population.Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association (PALTmed) ???Read the full study:?https://lnkd.in/g-gdD-QC Let's advance the conversation on improving cancer care transitions! #CancerCare #CareTransitions #Oncology #PostAcuteCare #GeriatricOncology

https://lnkd.in/e56UHTCs Article title: Virtual ward: The future in the management of neutropenic sepsis in the NHS Author(s):?Taiwo DD; Nnamani N; Ochai A; Adeyinka OO Journal: Innovations in Cancer Science & Clinical Therapeutics Abstract: Virtual ward offers patients with neutropenic sepsis a unique opportunity to receive hospital level of care in the comfort of their home, especially for patients who would otherwise be admitted to hospital because of their acute treatment. On the virtual ward, patients can receive hospital level of care with a significant opportunity to mitigate any risk of hospital-acquired infection in this subset of patients who are already immunocompromised amongst other benefits. Additionally, hospital length of stay can be shortened leading to reduced admission pressure in hospitals, increasing hospital admission avoidance, and encouraging safe discharge from hospital while still providing the best care for the patients. We report a case of a 76-year-old cancer patient who presented with neutropenic sepsis and was successfully managed on the virtual ward in a district hospital. This case highlights the importance of virtual wards an evolving innovation that can define the future management of cancer patients in NHS. It is safe and reduces the cost of inpatient care in healthcare. #Virtualward #Neutropenicsepsis #Hospitallevelofcare #Remotemonitoring #Chemotherapy #NHS ? #CancerBiology #CancerGenetics #CancerImmunology #CancerStemCells #CancerDiagnosisAndScreening #BiomarkersInCancerDiagnosisAndTreatment #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #PrecisionMedicineInCancerTreatment #CancerDrugDiscoveryAndDevelopment #ChemotherapyAndOtherSystemicTreatments #RadiotherapyAndOtherLocalTreatments #ImmunotherapyAndOtherTargetedTreatments #SurgeryAndOtherLocalTreatments #PalliativeCareAndSymptomManagement #CancerSurvivorshipAndQualityOfLife #CancerEpidemiologyAndPrevention #CancerDisparitiesAndHealthEquity #ClinicalTrialsInCancerResearch #TranslationalResearchInCancerScience #BigDataAndArtificialIntelligenceInCancerResearch #EthicsAndPolicyInCancerResearchAndCare #AngiogenesisInhibitors #Apoptosis #Biomarkers #Biopharmaceuticals #CancerBiology #CancerDiagnosis #CancerDrugDiscovery #CancerGenetics #CancerImmunology #CancerPrevention #CancerStemCells #Chemoprevention #Chemotherapy #ClinicalTrials #CompanionDiagnostics #ComputationalModeling #Epigenetics #GeneTherapy #Genomics #Immunotherapy #Inflammation #LiquidBiopsy

Individualized Medicine: Addressing Health Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Treatment Description: While Minnesota has returned to its status as a top-ranking healthcare state in the U.S. (Carbajal, E., 2024) health disparities remain prevalent among underserved populations. This initiative seeks to close these gaps by focusing on personalized care and advancing equity in colorectal cancer prevention. Developing personalized treatment plans for colorectal cancer patients presents unique challenges, particularly in addressing health disparities that disproportionately affect minority and underprivileged groups. Minnesota’s growing demographic diversity and evolving disease trends highlight the need for more targeted healthcare strategies. The CDC’s 2013 Health Disparities and Inequalities Report (Meyer, P.A., 2013) emphasized the need for advancing health equity for all populations. Aligned with the NIH's focus on minority health disparities, this project seeks to develop a comprehensive bio-psycho-social and clinical algorithm. By analyzing retrospective clinical and epidemiological data, the aim is to improve colorectal cancer prevention and enhance survival outcomes for minority patients treated in hospitals across Minnesota. My GI colleague and friend, Dr. Mike Smith, did a great job presenting our collective colorectal cancer (CRC) screening data analysis work across health systems and sites with this poster presentation at the American College of Gastroenterology 2024 Annual Meeting. ?? We ALL need to continue to encourage patients, family, friends, colleagues to get screened for colon cancer starting at age 45 and potentially earlier if there is a significant family history of colon cancer and/or pre-cancerous colon polyps. ?? Here is the summary of the findings: “There is a staggering increase in the number of high risk lesions detected during CRC screening colonoscopy over the study period for both cohorts, 59% for ages 50-54 and 44% for ages 45-49. By 2023, high risk lesion detection in the age 45-49 cohort reached the same rate the age 50-54 cohort had less than a decade before. These findings, plus a similar polyp detection rate in both groups, demonstrate the benefit of initiating CRC screening at ages 45-49 as high risk lesion detection rates continue to rise.” #GetScreenedForColonCancer #45isthenew50

It is because of early detection, and the dedication of scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses, and patients that at 83-years-old, my mother is still here with us today as a two-time breast cancer survivor.?? ? A recent article in STAT highlights a paper from JAMA Network Open, indicating that while cancer diagnoses returned to pre-COVID-19 levels in 2021, an estimated 130,000 cancer cases likely went undiagnosed in 2020. Although COVID-19 was a unique period in healthcare and some of these cases may have been detected later, this underscores the importance of understanding your family’s medical history, attending regular screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, and prioritizing routine visits to your primary care physician to maintain optimal health.? ? It is critical that we continue to support the research, scientific advancements, and community of cancer survivors enabling us to enhance early detection, diagnosis, and successful treatment. Additionally, it is crucial to address health equity by expanding access to early cancer detection through community outreach and education programs, and by increasing opportunities for screenings and services in underserved areas.? ? Together, we can drive change in the fight against cancer. By prioritizing early detection and equitable access to healthcare, we can build a healthier future for everyone.? #cancerscreening #BMS_employee https://lnkd.in/gySKeYuv
