From super-hero to super-connector - changing the leadership culture in the NHS. An excellent article from Suzie Bailey & Anna Burhouse (2019) on what great leadership looks like. It ends with this quote from Binney ?‘Accept yourself and respect people as they are; learn to see that you are not alone and not responsible in isolation. You can work out the key issues with others.’ https://lnkd.in/eU8X9XJs

What are the foundations of trust that leaders must know and practice? #relationships are essential to #wellbeingatwork, and #trust is a necessary foundation for building strong relationships. Data from Gallup suggest that only 21% of workers trust their leaders, and #healthcare is not different. Surveys from Deloitte found that only 45% of frontline clinicians trust that their organization's leadership is doing what's right for patients, and even fewer (23%) trust leadership to do what is right for the workforce. So how do we build more trust? The article by Rose Sherman has some great suggestions for nurse leaders, but for ALL #leaders here are the foundations I often suggest: ?? build positive relationships that show you care about your colleagues as human beings. Don't be scared to be compassionate, knowing it doesn't take away from keeping clear expectations and accountability. ?demonstrate your competence by showing your expertise, judgment, and ability to solve problems. ?? be reliable, consistent, and dependable. Model how you'd like your colleagues to show up. https://lnkd.in/egH4UBrq

Executive Coach for Healthcare Leaders /30+ years in Hospital/Nursing Leadership, Including Chief Nursing Officer/Driving Clinical and Operational Performance Improvement
Jill and Greta, I couldn’t agree more. Leadership is all about relationships and connectedness. That connection comes from truly listening, validating, and acting on the opportunities and challenges our frontline staff face. What I’m seeing more often today is that many leaders have shifted away from this connectedness, becoming more transactional. It's a "praise when good, punish when bad" mindset, but what defines "bad"? Too often, it's not meeting metrics fast enough, rather than recognizing milestones, growth, and engagement along the way. This isn’t new, but the way we support and develop our frontline leaders—and how we, as senior leaders, show up to foster this connection—is critical. I invite you to join me as I launch the Transformational Leadership Series this Friday, where we’ll dive deep into these challenges, bridging theory with real-world practice. Join Dr. Sue Padernacht, PCC, of Ncline Leadership Strategies and UC Irvine/UC San Diego for her pre-conference workshop on Negotiating to self-advocate and mitigate physician burnout. The concept of negotiation can make physicians feel uncomfortable because of the competitive bargaining assumption — that it’s equivalent to conflict and trickery. Conversely, negotiation is a collaborative problem-solving process that promotes self-advocacy and constructive interpersonal relations. It can lead to burnout when we don’t self-advocate, back down easily, or become argumentative and defensive. Let's explore this critical topic together and leave with takeaways to improve your personal and organizational strategies. Register by Friday and save hundreds! https://lnkd.in/g6vVvtit #physicianburnout #nurseburnout #physicianwellbeing #physicianwellness #nursewellness

#SundayReads: How do we bring compassion into organizations and entire sectors? Start with a powerful theoretical framework and get to work applying it. The best compassionate leadership framework is the original, from Monica Worline and Jane Dutton in “Awakening Compassion at Work.” The authors write on how to build compassionate culture to address the tragic burden of burnout in Canadian healthcare. The beauty of this article is that while the authors utilize a strengthened compassion culture to address their specific concern - burnout among Canadian healthcare workers - one can easily see how it will apply in a multitude of contexts. How do you want to strengthen compassion where you are? Read the discussion paper in ETCHWork by Breanna Wodnik and Paula Rowland: https://lnkd.in/e-EJpvk8. #CompassionateCulture #CompassionateHealthcare #CompassionateLeadership #CompassionInAction
