Every year on Memorial Day, we celebrate the brave individuals who have served our country through the armed forces. These men and women have made tremendous sacrifices to protect our freedoms and ensure our safety. However, their battles do not always end when they leave the battlefield. The transition back to civilian life can be fraught with challenges, particularly when it comes to mental and emotional health. Here at NAMI Philly, we recognize the ongoing struggles faced by many in the military community. Conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety are all too common among veterans, and they often require ongoing support and care. Our mission is to provide resources, education, and advocacy to help veterans and their families navigate these difficult times. We believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, and we are committed to ensuring that no one has to fight their battles alone. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please do not hesitate to seek help. The new, easy-to-remember crisis hotline number, 988, is available to provide immediate assistance. Trained professionals are ready to listen, offer support, and connect you with the necessary resources. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, and there is always hope for a brighter future. When DAV National Commander Nancy Espinosa first reached out to the VA for health care, she felt that her local center at the time was ill-equipped to address women’s health care. Since then, The VA has worked hard to establish a comprehensive health and gender-specific care model for women. While a lot of progress has been made, there are still gaps to fill. In February 2024, DAV published “Women Veterans: The Journey to Mental Wellness.” This report is a comprehensive assessment of the unique factors contributing to the staggering rates of suicide among women veterans and how the system charged with their mental health care can and must do better. Read Nancy’s full story and learn more about the report and DAV’s findings at womenveterans.org.

Advocating for Justice-Involved Veterans: A Call to Action When it comes to supporting veterans, our commitment must go beyond words. As someone deeply invested in advocating for justice-involved veterans, I believe that even the possibility of barriers hindering their participation in Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) programs demands serious scrutiny. Veterans who find themselves navigating the justice system have often experienced trauma, mental health struggles, or substance use disorders—complex challenges stemming from their service. VTC programs offer these veterans a path to rehabilitation, focusing on treatment and accountability rather than punishment. However, if obstacles—whether systemic, logistical, or procedural—prevent full access to these life-changing programs, we risk turning the slogan, "Leave No Veteran Behind," into just a feel-good phrase instead of a real call to action. That cannot happen. Every veteran deserves the chance to heal and reintegrate into society, and our justice systems must work to ensure that every door to support is open. This is about more than advocacy—it’s about accountability. We owe it to those who served to ensure that no veteran slips through the cracks. We must actively seek out and eliminate any barriers preventing their full participation in programs that can change their lives for the better. I thank everyone that supports my advocacy. Let's continue working to ensure that every veteran, regardless of circumstance, has access to the justice and services they deserve. Their future—and ours—depends on it. #VeteransSupport #LeaveNoVeteranBehind #JusticeReform #AdvocacyMatters #VeteransTreatmentCourt

Every year on November 11, we honor the millions of Americans who have selflessly served our country. I am grateful for the courageous people who have served honorably and protected us.?Today, I’d like to take a moment and call your attention to some of the health trends people who have served often experience at higher rates than civilians.?? ? Veterans are more likely to report being in very good or excellent health, despite ongoing — and in some cases, worsening — health challenges. They’re also more likely to experience physical health challenges, including higher rates of chronic disease and chronic pain, and higher rates of mental health concerns. Given this reality, it’s critical that people who have served take charge of their health and seek support when needed. One of the easiest ways to do this is by establishing a relationship with a primary care physician and accessing routine preventive care.

?? When it comes to an important topic like Veteran Suicide Prevention... ?? As Kenneth T. Davis, PhD ??puts it, sometimes it isn't the software that fails; it's the hardware. ?? We spend a lot of time focusing on the software and that's not a bad thing, but we don't see the hardware for what it is. Cutting edge research is showing us that PTSD, TBI, and black mold can be the culprits in contributing to this tragedy. ?? Thanks to important research being conducted by Andrew Heyman, MD MHSA and David E. Ross, MD we're starting to understand the impact. ??The BIED Society is building a coalition of Veteran advocacy groups to tackle this issue and bring the science forward to decision makers and organizations that can help make a difference. ?? YOU can help too, connect with me, and we can build a better way to tackle this issue and save lives! #veterans #veteransuicide #suicideprevention
