Perspectives: Having assisted many individuals with SUD into recovery, I am grateful when the individual “complains” about how a family member is overbearing or will not give them space. It opens a door to have just this conversation of perspectives and provide resources for each person. Your family lost the loving, funny, diligent, compassionate person you were before your SUD started. They have lost many moments of family memories that neither of you can get back. They have trauma and shame that they did something wrong. Similar to how you feel, that you have needed your family and no one has been there for you - that family member has needed you at some point in your addiction and you were not there for them. They have not abandoned you, they are doing the best they can in a situation that has, many times, a fatal ending. Anxiety when the phone does not ring. Anxiety when the phone does ring. Shame when you are not at a social gathering and they have to “make an excuse”. You have given your family member cause for being “overbearing”. The choices you have made up to now, have not been the best. You family now sees a glimmer of the person you used to be and they do not want to lose that again. Both sides of this situation need to learn trust again. As your recovery marathon begins, practice some patience with those supporting you. There are levels of fear, shame and trauma they may never share with you, just as there are aspects of your addiction, fear, shame and trauma that you may never share with them.

What do I do now? I recently gave a presentation on “Understanding Overdose and Prevention” to a group of families who have experienced loss and are determined to prevent further tragedies. According to a study by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, about one in three Americans knows someone who has died of a drug overdose. Despite being prepared and knowing my audience, I was not ready for the overwhelming stories shared with me. One woman, in particular, bravely opened up about her devastating losses due to Fentanyl. Her heartbreaking tale of loss and struggle left me with a haunting question: What do I do now? In a room filled with pain and resilience, I provided resources and support to the best of my ability, but her question lingers. If you have been impacted by overdose, please share your experience below. Let's stand together in solidarity and support. #overdose #opioidcrisis #harmreduction
