??Idle time is key for allowing our brains to process all those thoughts and emotions that pile up throughout the day. Where humans once had plenty of idle time doing simple tasks, we’re now finding ways to be 'productive' even in our moments of rest—like scrolling social media for productivity tips on a Saturday. This week, carve out some time to do nothing. Your brain will thank you. ?? Here is a riddle: What do we ignore until we lose it? Here is the answer: Our balance. We rely on our sense of balance – but what do we rely on? Our balance isn’t a thing – it is a process made up of 3 parts. 1. Vision – 70% of our sense of balance comes through vision.??We see what is around us and how far we are above the ground. 2. Vestibular/hearing – 15% comes from our inner ear – how we locate our head in space. 3. Proprioceptive – 15% comes from sensory information through our skin, our fascia that locates us in space. All 3 parts work together, collecting and responding to information to maintain our balance as we move.???Our balance process mostly works beneath our conscious attention. When we lose it, our attention is sharply brought to our experience of falling. I will be running my once-a-year series on Balance starting January 2025 – sign up to my list to receive information about the series.

?? An older man in a New York elevator commented, "Huh, everybody just staring at their phones." I couldn't resist a witty reply: "Yeah, it was so much better back when we all used to just stare at the elevator door." ?? Think big picture. Every generation has lamented the "distractions" of new technology, from the Walkman in the 80s to the television and even radio. When the novel was novel, social commentators lamented the number of people who retired for the evening to read a book rather than socialize with friends and family. Heck, I bet some grumpy old man ages ago longed for the days of epic poetry recited from memory around the bonfire, before that pesky papyrus came along! ?? Yes, we can go overboard with our phone use, but that's true of any tool (or toy). The key is balance. Enjoy your Candy Crush, but don't let it consume you. Keep up with the changing times and don't forget to enjoy the moment. So here's my Sunday Sermon: Don't sweat the small stuff! Embrace the present, phone in hand or not. Carpe you some diems. ?? How do you find balance in our tech-driven world? Share some life hacks below! ?? #PhoneAddiction #TechProgress #DataScience
