Just heard a MedTech pitch and it made me think about Seth Godin's concept of Smallest Viable Audience (SVA). If you aren't familiar, SVA is the idea that developing a focused offering for a small market can lead to much greater success than a diluted offering for a large market. And the diluted offering is exactly what happened in the recent MedTech pitch.. What would have been compelling as a niche became confusing and illogical in broad application. Seems to happen all the time in MedTech.. But there's a quandary for MedTech startups taking the SVA approach.. - Can the startup land funding without enough '000s in the TAM? - Can enough patients be recruited to demonstrate value in clinicals? - Will acquiring companies be disinterested due to limited market size? Are there SVA companies succeeding in MedTech? If so, how are they getting over these hurdles? What's working? What isn't? Would love to hear some thoughts on the topic.
