As climate changes, so does the #health landscape. Ignoring the changing patterns might lead to ill-prepared communities and overwhelmed #healthcare systems during extreme heat events. By integrating #Humidex projections in the development of hot weather plans, public health practitioners can better plan for future #heatwave events, resulting in communities that are better prepared for extreme weather conditions. For example, agencies can issue public health warnings and implement heat relief strategies based on specific thresholds using data from ClimateData.ca. Leveraging cutting-edge tools can enhance our public health responses, improving the well-being of all Canadians. Explore Humidex projections at https://ow.ly/H5YE50Qty6V

Check our last publication on #heatwaves effects in #India from our strong CHAIR-India project (https://lnkd.in/d4YUUnCA). In this study, we found strong evidence of #heatwave impacts on daily #mortality. Longer and more intense heatwaves were linked to an increased mortality risk, however, resulted in a lower burden of heatwave-related deaths. This is because the milder heatwaves were more common than the hotter ones. In the end, the most extreme heatwaves turned out to cause the lowest number of deaths because they were so infrequent. One consequence of this may be that heat warnings may need to be triggered at lower temperature thresholds to protect more people. We further argue that #policymakers and other #stakeholders need to understand and plan for both the relatively mild, short and common, and the extreme, long and uncommon heatwaves in order to offer relevant measures to protect public health in the future, especially in the context of #Climatechange!

?? Did you know that in the 77 countries surveyed in the 2023 Chilling Prospects analysis, 815 million urban poor people lack adequate cooling access?? ? ?? Heat waves threaten lives and livelihoods, particularly in urban regions where the "urban heat island effect" intensifies temperatures. Each year, heat waves cause numerous deaths, notably among vulnerable groups such as infants, older adults, and those with chronic health issues.? ? Simple actions like wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and seeking shade or cooler environments help protect against extreme heat.? ? ?? Listening to a fascinating talk about the impact of global #urban #overheating. Distinguished scientist, Mat Santamouris, links the increase in global temperature to the impact on health. Especially in relation to the poorest global populations. Some thought provoking statistics relating to the increase in the number of deaths during overheating events globally and suicide rates.

Yesterday was #WorldHealthDay, and at #EcoMatcher we understand how important trees are to human health! Here's how they help us: ?? Trees improve air quality and filter out pollution; ?? Trees provide shade, reducing the temperature in urban areas and mitigating heat-related illnesses; ?? Being around trees and green spaces has been linked to reduced stress, anxiety, and depression; ?? Spending time in nature, such as in parks or wooded areas, can boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and obesity. Do you need any more reason to love trees? Plant tree(s) for (y)our health! [email protected] #WorldHealthDay #HealthForAll #HealthyLiving #GlobalHealth #PublicHealth

?? Key #insights from Dr Sathiyanarayanan on Climate Change & One Health at the Indian Alliance for Public Health Preparedness session Dr. Sathiyanarayanan highlighted the growing health risks posed by #climatechange, including extreme #heat, vector-borne diseases, malnutrition, and #mentalhealth issues. Vulnerable populations, including #children, the elderly, and those living in poverty—face the greatest threat, making robust #publichealth interventions essential. He stressed the importance of multi-sectoral #collaboration to tackle emerging infectious diseases, many of which are #zoonotic, alongside strengthening disease #surveillance systems. Capacity building and community-level #education were also highlighted as key strategies for advancing climate and #health agendas. As we face increasing climate challenges, it is crucial to prioritize health system strengthening and #sustainable infrastructure for the future.
