Other times it's constant criticism, a relationship rejection, or another seemingly small hurt that we are not recovering from. As we mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, it’s crucial to bring attention and information to intimate partner violence (IPV) within the community of service members, Veterans, and their families (SMVF). IPV affects individuals’ sense of self, security, and safety. In April, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) SMVF Technical Assistance (TA) Center hosted a?webinar?titled “Intimate Partner Violence in the Military and Veteran Community.” The presenters provided an overview of IPV’s prevalence and risk within the military and Veteran community, as well as current initiatives and resources that are helping to address the issue. Important facts highlighted during the?webinar?included that Veterans are twice as likely to experience IPV, and that the experience can lead to consequences such as homelessness, health issues, and increased risk of suicide.
