Diversity and Inclusion during the holiday season During Christmas, we use this time to come together to celebrate and reflect on the past year. While it is a widely Christian holiday, we understand not everyone who is religious celebrates Christmas! I want to make sure we are inviting everyone to be included in these celebrations, and make awareness that it is not just a Christian holiday, but a holiday where friends and family comes together and enjoy one another’s company. It’s also important to acknowledge that some people may not celebrate at all, or want to join in on the festive activities, we need to make sure there are no questions, no pressure and no judgement. As we are all coming close to organising our work Christmas parties, I just wanted to point out a few things that everyone needs to be mindful of. - Ensure that invites are sent to everyone - Consider the date and time – does it coincide with other religious festivals or exclude carers, parents etc? - Provide affordable options – The Christmas period can cause financial stress, so make sure your plans do not contribute to additional spending - Cater for dietary requirements – remember that not everyone is comfortable in environments that serve alcohol - Check the accessibility requirements of attendees and that the venue is accessible and has facilities for disabled employees. No matter what you celebrate, I hope you all have a wonderful December! (I will be celebrating Christmas in Florida!)

25 years in the hospitality industry is not easy ??

As I do every morning, I make sure to read Our Daily Bread. Today's food for thought came from Matthew 6:10 regarding a Kingdom-Shaped Workplace. Jesus teaches us to pray for God's will to be done "on earth as it is in heaven" (v10). This prayer can help us imagine what our workplaces would be like under God's rule, where our "daily bread" is earned and our "debtors" forgiven (v11-12). As employees, it means working with "all our heart...for the Lord (Colossians 3:23)." As employers, it means giving staff what's "right and fair" (4:1). Whatever our role, whether paid or voluntary, it means tending to the well-being of those we serve with. Imagine how things could be different if God were in charge of our neighborhoods and workplaces. Because when He is, people flourish. (Sheridan Voysey)

A few of my team are Muslim. They don't celebrate Christmas. So, instead of taking Wednesday off like the rest of the team... They asked to work and save the holiday day for future. Of course, I said yes. I was online myself for a few hours too. We messaged throughout the day and jumped on a quick call when needed ???? It worked for us. I had plenty of time for festive dinner & films with family?? (Roast chicken though - never turkey in our house!) But I was also there for my team when they needed me. Too many companies force everyone into the same box. Same hours. Same holidays. Same expectations. But different people have different needs. Not to mention beliefs, cultures and traditions.?
