In Minnesota there are a number of cities that are looking to operate cannabis stores once it becomes legal in Minnesota next year. Not an unexpected decision since many cities in MN operate municipal liquor stores and looking for ways to increase revenue to fund/operate city projects. Will be interesting to see impact on real estate demand from cannabis business but have seen recently groups putting in cannabis as an exclusion in allowed uses within a retail project. The state in typical government fashion has had trouble getting defined rules, policies, etc setup even though there 24 other states selling cannabis where you take the rules and policies that work to speed things up. Will be a political hot button in cities as it roles out and interesting to watch impact on real estate market. #cannabis #realestate #landforsale

Dope piece in NY Cannabis Insider featuring Marino. client NYCBUD entitled "How are things going at Long Island City dispensary NYCBUD?" If you haven't had a chance to check out NYCBUD yet, stop what you're doing and go there now. Giancarlo Pinto Jonpaul Pezzo #cannabispr Here is an excerpt: "How much of a problem do illicit cannabis shops present to your business? The illicit market is a gigantic problem. The guidelines we have to follow require us to have a very high payroll to operate, and they handicap our ability to market the business. Meanwhile, down the block they can sell untaxed items next to a church, across the street from a police station, and have neon signage and all the marketing tools we are unable to utilize. If all the illicit shops were shut down, we’d all have a better chance, plus it’s safer for everyone. We are big supporters of the?Smokeout Act, which NY needs to pass now to give us all a fighting chance of competing. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs planning on opening dispensaries? Opening a dispensary is hard work and it’s unlike any other kind of retail. Between all the state’s regulation and compliance mandates, as well as the challenges resulting from federal prohibition, it makes selling cannabis far more challenging that anyone would expect. Also get ready for endless paperwork! It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!" #cannabiscommunity #MarinoCannabis

It would be great if Choose Chicago and World Business Chicago teamed up to develop an economic development and tourism strategy focused on cannabis. Here is why: Many major cannabis operators are based in Illinois. Illinois is home to the boldest social equity program in the country. Discovery Partner's Institute is working on a cannabis research center. We have fine dining and the best cultural institutions in the country. Imagine if city and business leaders tied all these things together and made Chicago the Napa Valley of cannabis. My broader point: We should lean into our cannabis economy. "Chicagoland could become the Napa Valley of cannabis, according to Pawar, if steps are taken to combine the areas’ food tourism scene and its recreational cannabis. He said he would love to see an integration of fine dining and cannabis. To achieve this, Pawar pitched a partnership between the cannabis industry, economic development agency World Business Chicago and Choose Chicago, which manages the city’s tourism. He hopes to open three to four more locations as the company grows." The Fifty/50 Group #cannabis #hospitalityindustry #tourism

ICYMI: Dope piece in NY Cannabis Insider featuring Marino. client #VERDI #Cannabis with one their periodic "check-in" pieces: "How are things going at #Chelsea #dispensary Verdi?" If you haven't had the opportunity to check out Verdi, highly recommend you head over there today! #cannabispr Here's an excerpt of the Q&A: "Can you describe your business experience outside of?cannabis? My family has operated liquor stores in Manhattan for over 60 years. How does that experience translate to running a?cannabis?dispensary? In some ways, it translates very well. We are used to operating in a licensed industry. In other ways, they’re totally different. For example, liquor takes up much more space for storage and accrues value over time, whereas cannabis has a small footprint but has an expiration date. This difference affects everything from demand for delivery, average order size, and how much inventory we can buy at a time. How much of a problem do illicit?cannabis?shops present to your business A big problem. The illicit shops make advertising much more costly because we are competing for the same eyeballs. What state?cannabis?policies/regulations do you think present the most challenges to your business? The fact that enforcement for unlicensed stores comes from the state/Albany, rather than the local precincts makes enforcement an unwinnable game of whack-a-mole. If this were the liquor industry, these unlicensed stores would be shut down within a week, let alone after months." #cannabiscommunity #MarinoCannabis Ellis Soodak

"I have never been a?weed tourist. I went to #Amsterdam a long time ago, but that was back when I was too young to fully appreciate what Amsterdam had to offer the world. Instead, I went to museums with my parents. #Museums. What a goddamn waste. Lucky for me, my home country has Amsterdam-ified itself in the ensuing decades, legalizing weed across dozens of states, with more to come. Given the course of both politics and industry over this century, this is a miracle: perhaps the greatest thing our #government has achieved in my lifetime. And I know you’re like, “OK Drew, but they killed bin Laden.” True. But would I un-kill that man in exchange for weed being legal in every state in every way? No comment. Weed is now legal where I live in #Maryland, but it’s not quite #California Legal. I can’t just waltz into any #dispensary in Maryland and start puffing away, and not every dispensary here allows customers without a medical marijuana card to buy everything in stock. Because of all that, I’ve never smoked weed in a legally designated safe place, except for that one time I hung out with #SnoopDogg, which doesn’t count because weed is spiritually legal anywhere Snoop Dogg is present. This is where working for a San Francisco publication comes in handy. California, befitting its stature as our coolest state, has fully legalized recreational marijuana. Even better, a number of dispensaries in the Bay Area have adjacent “#consumptionlounges,” which I will always refer to as hash bars even though I still kinda don’t really know what hashish is (and I’ve smoked it!). My editor asked if I wanted to test out a couple of these bars to see if they’re actually worth patronizing, or if they give off the kind of desperate vibe usually reserved for off-track betting parlors. Twist my arm, sir. Let’s go to the hash bar and find out. Follow me! But first, a quick clarification. These consumption lounges are not full-service cafes. They can’t sell food, or even nonalcoholic drinks like Amsterdam’s weed cafes. A proposed bill that?Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed last year, which?just passed the state Assembly again?with an overwhelming bipartisan vote, would allow these spaces to actually sell food alongside #gummies, pre-rolls, dimebags, dabs and weed-infused blocks of gouda cheese. So for now, Cali’s current hash bars don’t tick off every box on a stoner’s wish list, but they can offer a tantalizing glimpse of what a fully armed and operational weed scene could look like. Plus you can get high as balls, which I’m about to do right now. The hash bars" - SFGATE
