The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) ?? just released ?? a set of final rules amending the #EndangeredSpeciesAct (#ESA) Section 7, 4, & 4(d). ?? https://lnkd.in/gewCYiaQ These new rules remove all of the controversial Trump era changes to the ESA and are common-sense changes to align text with the intent of the law. ? We also support additional changes that won’t make the big headlines.?Section 7 changes: The specific inclusion of measures that #offset the impact of #incidentaltake; Adding the #mitigationhierarchy into Reasonable and Prudent Measures (RPMs); and Allowing ~offsite #mitigation (aka RPMs outside the action area). Section 4(d) changes: The inclusion of federally recognized Tribes in §17.31(b)(1) and §17.71(b)(1) that will allow Tribes to take threatened wildlife or plants without a permit for the actions noted (aiding a sick, injured, or orphaned specimen; or disposing a dead specimen; etc.). Thrilled to see USDA Secretary Vilsack issue a forward-thinking policy memo regarding wildlife conservation this morning. The memo, entitled "Conserving and Restoring Terrestrial Wildlife Habitat Connectivity?and Corridors in the United States" is a comprehensive approach to public and working lands conservation efforts that spans the USDA Forest Service, USDA-NRCS, and other agencies under the Department's purview.?The land-use planning components are tantalizing, and the Working Lands for Wildlife section will likely guide significant conservation capacity toward more strategic landscape conservation efforts. While we often talk about wildlife corridors in the context of ungulate migrations, this directive is broader and will allow innovative approaches to connectivity conservation across the East, West and Midwest. The intended result: healthy and resilient wildlife populations, science-informed public lands management, and stronger support for agricultural producers who want to do good for wildlife while growing food for our country. This is the beginning - not the end - of putting together better policy and practices for wildlife on the move and we're looking forward to supporting next steps in the process. https://lnkd.in/gDa7B9GQ https://lnkd.in/gskb8pv4

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is expected to announce a decision by mid-December on whether listing the monarch butterfly under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is still warranted and, if so, whether it should be listed as “threatened” or “endangered.” North America's eastern and western monarch butterfly populations have faced a variety of threats, including habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and climate change. In 2014, a petition formally requested the monarch be listed under the ESA, sparking a thorough review process. If a proposed rule to list the monarch as endangered or threatened is published this December, it will be based on decades of research and multiple years of rigorous data review.
