This year's theme for South Asian Heritage Month is "Free to Be Me," yet many of us don’t feel safe leaving our homes right now. I had planned to share more content this week celebrating SAHM, but given the events of the last few days, this post has taken a different turn. For now, this is a reminder to all organisations with ethnic minority employees: ?? Check in on your employees. Allyship is needed right now. ?? Allow your employees to work from home if they don’t feel safe coming to the office. ?? Please don’t expect ethnic minority employees to lead your Employee Resource Groups for race discussions right now. It’s not their job, and it’s exhausting. Let this be a reminder for us to keep doing the work to become a more inclusive society. Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go. And finally, let’s not be quick to brush this off as a view held by just the minority or something that will pass. It’s racism, it exists, and it needs addressing.

Thanks to Frankfurt School of Finance & Management for the opportunity to share my view on the link between diversity and enhanced business results. Diversity cannot and should never substitute performance as metrics, but it does support and enhance business performance. Simply put: -a homogenous group will likely find one solution to a problem from one specific perspective -a divers group will find multiple solutions to a problem drawn from multiple perspectives based on e.g. divers qualification, experience, upbringing, age gender etc.. Having multiple potential solutions to a problem will allow a business to compare and pick the best fitted solution. To have such positive impact and avoid dips in performance and specifically in pace, diversity needs to be managed. It requires an empathetic manager, who is the translator and mediator for the group. Access to the business world is not a given for many divers groups. To allow persons with divers backgrounds to find their way into a career and businesses it does require mentors, who can support and guide.
