The devastation in Western North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene is unimaginable. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I’m grateful for the tireless efforts of first responders, volunteers, and local, state, and national agencies working around the clock to help those impacted. Amid the devastation, it’s heartening to see companies like Baxter International Inc. stepping up. Their facility in Marion, N.C., a major supplier of IV fluids, was severely impacted, covered in mud with damaged roads and bridges cutting off access. Despite the challenges, Baxter's first priority was to reach out to their employees. Instead of just sending thoughts and prayers, they’ve used ATVs to check on colleagues in hard-to-reach areas and set up an employee support center to provide supplies, even delivering essentials to those who can’t make it to the center. While working to support their employees, they’ve also brought in 500 workers, with more on the way, to repair the facility and ensure hospitals continue receiving the critical supplies they need. In a time when we often hear of businesses putting profits before people, Baxter’s response shows how corporations can rise to the occasion and do right by both their employees and the public. Today, we’re continuing to look back on HCA Healthcare’s Top 10 stories from the past year. In the fall of 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton made history for the magnitude of their aftermath. The unwavering commitment and care of colleagues across HCA Healthcare remain unforgettable. Hurricane Helene, which impacted Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia as a Category 4 storm, is the second deadliest hurricane – behind Katrina in 2005 – to make landfall this century in the continental United States. Two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck Florida as a Category 3 storm that spawned roughly four dozen tornadoes throughout the state and caused massive flooding in central and west Florida. Throughout these two large scale disasters, HCA Healthcare stood ready with the resources needed to provide uninterrupted patient care and to support our colleagues and communities. This Category 4 storm, arriving on the heels of Hurricane Helene, highlights a new era of unpredictability that demands not just preparation, but adaptation. In moments like these, it's not just about battening down the hatches—it's about leveraging our collective capabilities to support those in the path of destruction. FEMA and local authorities are mobilizing resources, and we must also do our part, whether through volunteering, donating, or innovating solutions to help communities withstand and recover from such events. The disruptions to daily life, including campaign events, serve as a stark reminder of what truly matters. In the aftermath of such storms, it is the human spirit, community solidarity, and our ability to overcome adversity that will guide us forward. Let this be a call to action for each of us to contribute in meaningful ways, ensuring that while we cannot control the storm, we can certainly control how we respond to it. Hurricane Helene went from a Cat 1 to a Cat 4 in a day. North Florida was supposed to get hit hardest, but instead, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas seem to have caught the brunt. Me, my family, and our homes are all fine. But towns and homes a short drive from us have been disappeared. As the storm approached, I checked the news to see if I should evacuate. Exactly zero shelters had been opened to the community in my area. Truly, I didn't think the storm would be serious based on what I read. The next morning felt like pandemonium on my news/email alerts. Mandatory evacuations. Cat 4 storm. Our home in a flood zone. State and city leadership were scrambling, at people’s expense. I say all this because a few years ago, I was working somewhere that all but forced me to work through a hurricane. I had to request a sick day to evacuate and help my family board up windows for a storm so powerful it almost ripped our roof off while we tried to sleep. Now, I'm lucky enough to be self-employed. But when you think of the people who are stranded or worse in Helene's aftermath, think about the employers who strong-armed them into staying so they could milk a few drops of profitability out of them. Community, one of the only things I talk about consistently here, means coming together when it counts. Whether it’s checking on your neighbor, offering shelter, or simply donating a dollar, I hope you show up for those who have been hit hardest. (Links in the comments for folks looking to help.)
