Hazardscape is developing a robust First Nations Emergency and Disaster Management program that prioritizes capacity development over external supports that leave Nations dependent on government support and expensive consultants. What we do: Build disaster management capacity within First Nation communities. How do we do it: - Community led disaster management governance development. - Hiring from within the community. - Customizing our base disaster management training program for the community we are working with. And sharing the program with the community to use to train future emergency management practitioners. - Linking communities with experienced First Nation mentors and coaches. - Coordinating services so common emergency management terminology is promoted in the community's language and oral culture, making it part of their linguistic history. This empowers Nations to develop internal ways of working and it helps them understand the terminology that is used by neighboring non-Indigenous emergency management agencies. What we don't do: Take up space in the community by engineering dependencies on our contractors. Follow us to learn more about how we are supporting First Nations as they prepare their homes.

Our team provides residents and visitors with the comfort that if they encounter a disaster or emergency, they're in good hands. The consolidation of Provincial Traffic and SAPS into our node has lifted overall responses in the region, building new confidence. How have you grown over these last two years? I've gained leadership and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations which need decisive action, and I've grown in several areas. Policy understanding and implementation - Weskus Distrik excels in clean administration, and I've learned disaster management policies, been exposed to processes and procedures, and I understand the legislation and regulations governing disaster management, especially in emergency response coordination. Risk Assessment & Mitigation - Assessing vulnerabilities in communities is an important learning. With this, understanding how to mitigate risks before disasters occur. What do you enjoy most about your job? Engaging with our community. Public awareness, community involvement and educating people about disaster preparedness and responsiveness is rewarding. What stresses you the most? Handling life-and-death situations is stressful - you must be decisive and accurate. Juggling multiple calls as a Call Taker but staying focused as you manage communication between the various services is not easy either. One is always aware that your actions and decisions can directly impact the outcome of an emergency. You have good support? Yes, we do. Mr Franquin Petersen gives us guidance about managing stress and coaches us on how to handle complex situations, and improve our decision-making. The Boulder Office of Disaster Management (ODM) has launched a new program that enables community members to stay informed via text message during an emergency. Starting in July, ODM will add text messaging to the ways community members can choose to stay informed during a disaster. This is an enhancement to the current communications process, which relies heavily on the ODM website and social media. The keyword text messaging system will only be used when the Emergency Operations Center is activated to respond to a disaster. This typically occurs for larger scale incidents that are likely to last some time and affect a large portion of the community. Instead, the new keyword text messaging system will provide important information that may be helpful to know during a disaster. Examples of information that will be shared include incident updates, community resources, road closures, sheltering information, and information about other community impacts.
