It’s hard to believe my 7 foster pups are already 7 weeks old! “They grow up so fast,” I say to anyone who will listen. Meet Hulk—consistently the heavyweight of the pack since birth, now tipping the scales at 6.5 kg. All the pups have mastered sitting, giving paw, and problem-solving. They’re confident, happy little souls exposed to a world of sounds—from my household bustle, and office chatter, to Alexa’s (over-enthusiastic) playlist, which features Katy Perry's Firework far more often than I'd like when playing desensitising sounds. Mum still feeds them occasionally, but their transition to mushed solids has been met with enthusiasm. Watching them thrive has been a joy, but it’s impossible not to think about what their lives might have been like if their Mum hadn’t been found as a stray. Would they have grown up frightened and frantic, living in darkness and solitude? Too many puppies face that reality—born into overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, bred for profit with no thought for their welfare or future. For these seven, I’ve worked to ensure they have the best possible start in life. From socialisation to enrichment, I’ve tried to prepare them for whatever challenges they may face as they grow. They’ve been given love, care, and a chance at a brighter future—a future I wish every pup could have. Fostering is one way we can make a difference. It’s not always easy, but the rewards are immeasurable. Offering love, care, and safety to an animal in need transforms lives—not just theirs, but ours too, I've learned a lot! If you’ve ever considered fostering, I encourage you to take that step. Every day, we receive numerous rescue requests via email, phone, and text. Our intake director carefully reviews each one, gathering all the necessary information about the dogs in need. We prioritize the dogs based on urgency, post their details in our Facebook group to find foster homes, and pass them on to our foster team for placement. Our dedicated foster team works diligently to respond to inquiries, process applications, and reach out to approved fosters. While some placements can be handled quickly, many require more time due to specific needs, such as medical fostering or restrictions like no dogs, no cats, no kids, women only, or men only, often in various combinations. Every dog that comes into our rescue receives a health exam, vaccinations, and any necessary medical treatments. We are committed to ensuring that all health concerns are addressed by a veterinarian before adoption. To maintain this high level of care for our Great Danes, we rely heavily on consistent donations. However, the costs of veterinary care have risen steadily over the past four years, making it increasingly difficult to take in dogs that aren’t healthy. Coupled with the rising cost of living, our donation levels have hit an all-time low. Ultimately, our ability to rescue Great Danes is directly tied to our funding. We understand that these are tough times for many, including us. We kindly ask you to consider setting up a monthly donation of just $5.
