Find art - at our public schools! For this school year, we are showcasing the amazing artwork by students and professionals alike that grace our schools, campuses and community. To kick off National Literacy Month in September, we are sharing “The Storyteller,” a formidable concrete giant with a friendly smile. According to artist Kay Mura, she “warmly welcomes children to listen to her stories about Kapālama; the school, its curriculum, the multi-ethnic make-up of its students, and what the area meant to ancient Hawaiians. Her larger-than-life size emphasizes the magical quality of the stories she tells.” Collection: SFCA?Art in Public Places Collection Artist: Kay Mura Date: 2002 Type: Sculpture Material: Concrete #HawaiiPublicSchoolsProud #CapitolModern #HawaiiStateArtMuseum #ArtInPublicPlacesHawaii #HawaiiArtist #SupportLocalArtists

That’s a beautiful piece of art. When time permits, check out the large-scale mural on Honouliuli Middle School’s administrative building. The SY 2024 mural project was a result of a partnership between the Pacific Literacy Consortium, muralist Kamea Hadar, and Honouliuli Middle School. Hadar spent a week in the classroom with students and a week painting the mural, which represents the input from community stakeholders. The artwork is a stunning visual depiction of the school’s vision.
