Find art - at our public schools! For this school year, we are showcasing the amazing artwork by students and professionals alike that grace our schools, campuses and community. To kick off National Literacy Month in September, we are sharing “The Storyteller,” a formidable concrete giant with a friendly smile. According to artist Kay Mura, she “warmly welcomes children to listen to her stories about Kapālama; the school, its curriculum, the multi-ethnic make-up of its students, and what the area meant to ancient Hawaiians. Her larger-than-life size emphasizes the magical quality of the stories she tells.” Collection: SFCA?Art in Public Places Collection Artist: Kay Mura Date: 2002 Type: Sculpture Material: Concrete #HawaiiPublicSchoolsProud #CapitolModern #HawaiiStateArtMuseum #ArtInPublicPlacesHawaii #HawaiiArtist #SupportLocalArtists

The Historians of Netherlandish Art website and digital journal is one of my favorite projects from the archive, especially because it’s very much alive and in use today. It was one of the first digital publications we designed and we loved the process of exploring how a rigorous scholarly experience could be widely accessible to anyone. The design contained references to Northern European art history including typographic ligatures and ornaments that were complemented by a bold color palette and modern user interface. Read more about the project in the case study on our website at https://lnkd.in/eckQsNhD or read the latest edition of the Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art at https://jhna.org/. #arthistory #websitedesign #webdesign #digitalpublication #digitalhumanities #digitaljournal

?? Dive into the mystical world of Hilma af Klint with her monumental work “The Ten Largest, No. 3, Youth” from 1907. As a pioneer of abstract art, af Klint’s works precede the recognition given to Kandinsky and others. This piece, part of a series illustrating the stages of human life, is characterized by vibrant colors, organic forms, and an amalgamation of symbolism and spiritual motifs. ?? In "Youth," we see af Klint merging botanical motifs with geometric shapes, creating a dynamic and colorful interplay that invites viewers into a narrative beyond the visible. The scale of these paintings, often larger than two meters in height, was revolutionary at the time, intended by af Klint to be shown in a spiral temple, highlighting her visionary approach not just in art but in curatorial practice as well. ?? Her artistic vision was driven by her involvement with spiritualism and theosophy. Af Klint’s works are not merely paintings; they are visual manifestations of complex spiritual ideas, intended to convey the deeper mysteries of existence. “The Ten Largest” disrupts traditional narratives about the inception of abstract art, placing her years ahead of her male contemporaries in abstraction. ?? However, her groundbreaking work sparked controversies, particularly with her insistence that her abstract paintings should not be shown until 20 years after her death. This stipulation meant that her pioneering role in abstraction remained unrecognized for decades, only gaining proper recognition long after most of her male counterparts. ?? Explore the enigmatic beauty and profound complexity of Hilma af Klint’s art, which continues to challenge our perceptions and enrich our understanding of abstract art’s origins. #HilmaAfKlint #AbstractArt #TheTenLargest #ArtHistory #SwedishArt #WomenInArt #Spiritualism #Theosophy #ModernArt #EarlyAbstraction #ArtExhibition #MuseumCollection #ArtisticVision #Symbolism #BotanicalArt #GeometricArt #ArtLover #ArtCollector #VisualArt #ArtEducation #ContemporaryArt #ArtCurator #Mysticism #HistoricalArt #CulturalHeritage #Artworld #ArtDaily

Asia by Stephen Lucas (72"×72" acrylic on canvas c 1998) There are some people who will tell you that abstract art and contemporary art are the same thing. Though the terms are often used interchangeably, their meanings do differ. The classification of abstract art is not particular to any one period and that is the essential difference.? Rather than describing a specific art movement, the phrase ‘abstract art’ is a very broad umbrella term encompassing a huge range of styles and approaches. Because abstraction first appeared in the early 20th century, the term is usually applied to modern and contemporary art made during and after this time, including the art of today. Modern art refers to the beginning of the Impressionist period that happened around 1870 and were not always abstract. Thus the use of modern art to describe abstract art is a fallacy. Ultimately, the evolution of abstract art—like the evolution of modern art more broadly—has been a series of responses to the experience of life in the 20th and 21st centuries. The contemporary art genre finds a vast amount of quality abstract art being made today, and the best of it is every bit as good as the best abstract art of the past. -Anonymous #new_and_abstract

?? Discover "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, 1893—a profound emblem of existential angst that has echoed through the ages. This iconic artwork captures a figure against a tumultuous orange sky, embodying the anxiety of the human condition. Painted during the peak of Munch's expressionist phase, the work uses vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes to evoke emotional resonance. ?? Artistic Vision: Munch's expressionist style is portrayed vividly in "The Scream." The swirling sky and the agonized figure highlight his focus on depicting the internal rather than the external world. The use of intense colors and loose, gestural forms make this artwork a preeminent example of how emotions can be powerfully represented through abstract elements. ?? Controversies: "The Scream" has seen its share of turmoil, having been stolen twice in major museum thefts but thankfully recovered on both occasions. Its stark, haunting depiction of mental distress was both revolutionary and controversial, challenging existing norms about the portrayal of psychological states in art. This masterpiece continues to be relevant, reflecting universal themes of fear and human vulnerability. Dive deeper into the swirling vortex of "The Scream" and feel the potent emotions that transcend time and culture. #EdvardMunch #TheScream #Expressionism #ArtHistory #Museum #ExpressionistArt #MunchMuseum #ArtTheft #ArtRestoration #Symbolism #ModernArt #ArtLovers #ArtCollector #Painting #1890s #Artwork #FineArt #PsychologicalArt #Masterpiece #ArtisticExpression #Vulnerability #HumanCondition #CulturalIcon #ArtConservation #HistoricalArt #ArtisticVision #ArtInFocus

My new art series titled, "Humanity" is a contemporary abstract art collage series that serves as a visual testament to the collective yearning for peace, reconciliation, and solace in a world marred by ongoing global tensions, particularly focusing on the strife in Ukraine, Yemen, and Gaza. Through the expressive use of color, the artwork captures the somber and moody atmosphere surrounding these conflicts, emphasizing the collective human loss incurred in the pursuit of individual interests. Each piece in this series is a call for the end of violence and war, a plea for unity, and a brushstroke of hope. The interplay of dark and moody colors intends to create a powerful visual narrative, reflecting the shadows cast by conflict and the urgent need to break the ongoing cycle of violence. Yet, within this turmoil there's a glimmer of hope represented by uplifting tones and subtle sparks, signifying resilience and the potential for healing and renewal in the face of adversity. https://lnkd.in/ghS-J66J

2 个月That’s a beautiful piece of art. When time permits, check out the large-scale mural on Honouliuli Middle School’s administrative building. The SY 2024 mural project was a result of a partnership between the Pacific Literacy Consortium, muralist Kamea Hadar, and Honouliuli Middle School. Hadar spent a week in the classroom with students and a week painting the mural, which represents the input from community stakeholders. The artwork is a stunning visual depiction of the school’s vision.
