HASS-RLN leaders got to experience how research and creative activities are very much centered in the wider Pittsburgh community. We visited the Mattress Factory, stopped at Randyland to take in the vibrancy of color and art, paused at one of the original Carnegie Libraries on our way to the historic Deutschtown neighborhood on Pittsburgh's Northside. Byron Rich, Assistant Provost of Academic Innovation, penned this article about how unexpected collaborations can lead to transformative change for our communities, students, and businesses. take a look!
This was fun to write. Higher Ed needs a re-think, but so do societal preconceptions of places like Allegheny. Unexpected collaborations can make our towns stronger. https://lnkd.in/ejsViGPy

We find ourselves amidst a housing crisis exacerbated by local city councils yielding to NIMBY interests, failing to show the political courage needed to enact necessary change. This has perpetuated the greatest generational inequity in history. To address this, we must streamline bureaucratic processes, accelerate approvals, foster denser developments around transit hubs and major roads, and promote "missing middle" housing options. Simultaneously, we are witnessing a surge in criminal activity, from burglaries to car thefts and gun violence. Our discussions around transit fail to adequately tackle this pressing issue. Congestion worsens, distractions abound with populist but economically unsound proposals, while inefficiencies persist and taxes climb. Where is the visionary leadership for a brighter tomorrow? Drawing upon 24 years of immersion in Mississauga's community, I have actively contributed to its progress. From co-chairing the Mississauga Summit and leading the Mississauga Arts Council to engaging in grassroots campaigning and advocating for civic causes through Transit Alliance, my commitment to our city runs deep. Vote for better Mississauga! Vote for better future for you and your kids! ... https://lnkd.in/gSRcEKZT #briancrombie #bcrombie #briancrombieformayor #votebriancrombie

I recently read the book, "Upswing" by Dr. Robert Putnam of Harvard University. When it was published a few years ago, it was advertised as the 20th Anniversary edition of Dr. Putnam's book "Bowling Alone." I quickly learned when I started reading it was the book pays homage to Bowling Alone, but is a far more in-depth look at US history. According to Dr. Putnam, the era we are living in right now closely aligns with the last several decades of the 1800's. He described each of these eras as "I" societies. By this, he communicates that people in the US are focused on themselves and what is good or bad for themselves. Contrary to this situation of society, Dr. Putnam wrote that most of the 20th Century (1900 - 1970) we were a "We" society. During that time, people cared about what happened to society at large more than themselves. However, Dr. Putnam also fully admits the "We" society was mostly enjoyed by white men. Although it was far from perfect union, the "we" society helped us move US society forward much better than we do while focused on ourselves. I also learned that Dr. Putnam and several of his grad students are promoting a new movement that communities can take advantage of. They have made available a movie on the website putnamdoc.com titled "Join or Die." The concept here is we can join together and accomplish much more for our society than if we go it alone. The "Upswing" is what happens when society turns back to a "we" society again. I encourage everyone to read this book.

How can we honour both the right to being an individual and commitment to the community in DEIJ work? Drew Perkins and I explore this tension in this episode of DEIJ Hot Takes. ‘there's an inherent tension between the efforts of expansive DEI and actual social justice, and the enlightenment principles that, that I think are undergirding the ways in which we should move forward.’ It was a pleasure to hear Drew, a heterodoxy enthusiast, introduce and explain important ideas that are critical at this time in the DEIJ narrative. We explore the balance between individual rights and community needs, advocating for mutual cooperation and shared humanity. ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ????????: -?????????Reading and learning about approaches to knowledge and how to engage with different views through a lens of exploration can support DEIJ work as it enables different perspectives and approaches to exist together. -?????????All perspectives and approaches have value which can support progress. If we accept that while ensuring there is not a harmful dominance of one approach, we can create a more inclusive society. -?????????Inclusivity requires balancing individual and community needs. -?????????The safety of the community is the ultimate priority but beyond this, equity work should not limit freedom of speech and expression. Dr. Moumita’s dedication to justice serves as a powerful reminder that change is possible when we stand together. In today’s society, where challenges often seem overwhelming, her commitment to advocating for the marginalized inspires us all to take action. Each one of us has the potential to contribute to a more just world, whether through raising awareness, supporting those in need, or simply being a voice for the voiceless. Let us remember that justice is not just a legal term; it’s a moral obligation. By following Dr. Moumita’s example, we can cultivate empathy and understanding in our communities. Every small step counts, and collectively, we can create a ripple effect that leads to meaningful change. Together, let’s strive for a society where fairness prevails, and everyone’s rights are respected and protected. As we move forward, let’s carry the torch of justice, inspired by the work of advocates like Dr. Moumita, and remind ourselves that our efforts, no matter how small, can lead to a brighter future for all.

https://lnkd.in/eiUNYyJT Offering -as well as taking, for that matter- advice is known to be frowned upon the younger we are; paradoxically, a time when we may be more direly in need of wisdom. Nonetheless if solipsists are right, well then, one may be forgiven to feel comfort in the notion that one can only know one’s own experience. Still, Cumberbatch delivery of Vonnegut’s advice, does seem to offer some measure of relief in that it is ultimately up to each of us to pass judgement on our experience, and what part of it might be worthwhile passing onto future generations. #Vonnegut #future #advice
