Standing Up for Surfing Freedom in Hong Kong?????♂? At Global Surf Industries, we believe in the transformative power of surfing. It’s more than a sport—it’s a way of life that connects people to the ocean, to nature, and to a global community. That's why we are standing with the surfers of Hong Kong in the face of the government's unexpected surfing ban. This decision is impacting local surfers who wait for this time of year. To show our support, Global Surf Industries is committed to covering any fines imposed on surfers for doing what they love — surfing on one of our boards. We believe in the right to ride the waves, and we won’t let a misguided policy stop that. The waves are there to be ridden. #Surfing #FreedomToSurf #GlobalSurfIndustries #StandWithSurfers #HongKong #SurfCulture #OceanConservation #lifeisbetterwhenyousurf https://lnkd.in/ghDADC3T

How did surfing come to China? This is how the story is being told by local Hainanese: Back in the 90s, an Australian doing business on China’s Hainan Island discovered that the all-year-round waves in Hainan’s Wanning are very suitable for surfing. He brought the first surfboards from Australia, and later the locals also took it up. Surfing is now part of daily life, and the Wanningers are just amazing in their surfing style, going out for surfing every day, also in waves up to 5 meters high. This is a rather short history considering that surfing developed centuries ago in other places. For China, however, this is a rather long time in the sense that the place – even with favorable water sport conditions – is still not that developed in terms of tourism and infrastructure. Foreign travelers are scarce, especially after Covid, and if any, they are living in China. Here the great push from the government is needed to set a spiral in motion, and the right people need to be behind it to profoundly change the situation. Then it can happen all of a sudden. Until then let’s enjoy an alternative and laid-back surfing spot. #china #economy #surfing #hainan #wanning

What does Instagram and Facebook say the Surfing TAM is for the top markets? 38m Sizing the market and triangulating the market is important. Online searches and a range of publications estimate the global surfing market between 25 - 50m. That’s quite the spread . A country by country bottoms up approach and calculating what 100k customers per the 150 wave pools that are scheduled to be built yields another interesting result. But looking at what Meta / Facebook / Instagram cite as the current number of surfers in their social graph is a very interesting data point for any conversation around the TAM. 38m and growing strongly. Surfing is a structural winner. It will be interesting to see what the Olympic Games and all the new wave pools going online in 2024 do to this number later on in the year.
