As Universiteit Leiden and the The University of Edinburgh intensify their collaboration, they will launch The Hague Global Hub. An amazing testament to the value of working together to address the challenges of our time, using interdisciplinary research and teaching. While simultaneously engaging with the local and global communities that are affected. A marriage of science and society. As similar but complementary universities we can learn a lot from Edinburgh's Futures Institute interdisciplinary approach to meeting current societal challenges, while sharing Leiden's own specialties. I'm loathe to criticize the University of Michigan as I love the university to an unhealthy degree, and I'm still reveling in the football national championship and 3x wins over Ohio. My experiences there shaped me more than anything outside of my family. So it absolutely pains me to critique the new Vision 2034 as a giant pile of focus grouped garbage that says nothing and means nothing. https://lnkd.in/g79MMqAi "Our vision is to be the defining public university, boldly exemplified by our innovation and service to the common good. We will leverage our interdisciplinarity and excellence at scale to educate learners, advance society, and make groundbreaking discoveries to impact the greatest challenges facing humanity." First off, this could be any public (why does it say public anyway, I want to crush Stanford, Notre Dame, and Princeton too) university anywhere in the world. And you know what I'm gonna stop there. There's no point in parsing this ephemeral banality pretending to be a vision. It's forgotten immediately after reading and cannot serve as a North Star since there is no there there. Simply put, a vision cannot and should not be predicated on the viewpoint of others. Nothing groundbreaking, bold, or innovative can ever come from this. DON'T LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU OR YOU END UP AS THE AVERAGE OF THOSE OTHERS. Michigan is not, nor ever has been average. This vision statement, however, falls far short of even reaching average and isn't remotely close to what we should expect from the leaders and best.

Over 120 participants from the nine members of the European University of Technology gathered at the Technical University of Sofia from 26 February to 1 March 2024 to discuss and design the strategic roadmap for joint European research and the convergence towards a European quality assurance system under the guidance of the Technological University of Sofia. The expert review of the EUt+?application for research organisation states that we could contribute important insights to EU policy making. United, we believe that the nine universities can substantially contribute to the processes of expanding the boundaries of European cooperation in the field of higher education and research.?

Of particular note in this issue is a highlight of the research being done by undergraduate and graduate students from across the LMU Honors program, LMU-DCOM, and LMU-CVM in the Imaging and Analysis Center at the Hamilton School of Math and Science building. The Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute (DOST SEl), in collaboration with the University of San Carlos, successfully hosted the 12th Graduate Scholars' Conference of the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resources Development Program (ASTHRDP). With the theme, "Artificial Intelligence: Embracing Change and Ethical Use in Research," the conference provided a platform for DOST graduate scholars to present their research outputs and gain deeper insights into emerging trends in science and technology. It has been a conference-packed fortnight! What a great 10th Researcher Education and Development Scholarship Conference today. Mind you, there is nothing like finding yourself doing a surprise paper on 36 hours to keep you on your toes (thanks to Ruth Currie for being chill about my repurposing our work on "Holding Space for Reflective Supervisory Praxis" from CoPhS last week!). My 3 top highlights from today were: ? The compelling Keynote from Faith Uwadiae about how research leadership starts from self-leadership: there is no need for titles, we all lead. I loved her circle reflective questions (1) Who am I? (2) How do others experience me? (3) Where am I leading now? (4) What type of leader do I want to be in those spaces? ? The inspiring paper from Anna Brady about how to take a whole-organisation approach to re-building trust and bring adaptive leadership into entrenched and problematic organisational cultures. ? Finally Selvi Jeyaseelan and Julie Reeves left me with not one (RE-AIM: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, implementation, maintenance) but two (KAP: Knowledge Attitudes Practices) important models to build with when planning the 2025 suite of University of Glasgow Talent Lab research leadership programmes (https://lnkd.in/eDNu7Cx7)?

Please join James Lee's talk on November 1, 2024, in person or online. In this event, Dr. Lee will compare the 5,277 academicians and ‘experts’ elected or selected by the Chinese Academies of Science and Engineering and the Chinese Association of Science and Technology at the apex of the Chinese academe, with 357,833 elite Chinese university students at the base to show that, in contrast to well-known findings for elite education in France and recent findings for elite students, faculty, and intellectuals in the United States, the distinctive defining feature of the Chinese academe over the last century is the salient proportion of top students and scholars from diverse disadvantaged backgrounds. His research documents two distinct revolutions in the Chinese academe. First, beginning in 1952, a significant proportion of elite university students came from non-elite backgrounds which was a sharp contrast to before. Second, especially after 1977, in contrast to elite university students of disadvantaged background who are increasingly urban, Chinese academicians and experts increasingly come from rural disadvantaged backgrounds.

A high-level delegation led by Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President, visited CentraleSupélec, Paris-Saclay University in France on 5 April. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by President Boey and Professor Romain Soubeyran, President of CentraleSupélec, Paris-Saclay University, to foster academic exchange and further develop the co-operative relationship between the two institutions. The agreement focuses on the exchange of academic, research and administrative personnel between the two institutions. Additionally, it explores the feasibility of student exchanges and teaching collaboration, and encourages joint research projects in areas of mutual interest.
