One of the most perplexing practices I've observed across administrations and jurisdictions is that hiring for political appointments often relies solely on networking. There are typically no job descriptions or open hiring processes—you just need to know the hiring decision-maker to be considered. This approach raises significant ethical concerns, hampers transparency, stifles diversity, and frequently leads to ineffective appointments. Betsy Cooper and I suggest that the next administration implement a jobs board to source political appointees, beginning with lower-level positions. This model could extend to state and local levels, serving any Governor's or Mayor's office as well. Read more below!
