Apply for the Acres: Cultivating Equity in Black Agriculture Program! After two successful cohorts, Acres has solidified its foundation and is poised to reach new heights as we announce the launch of cohort three! This year, we welcome new program sponsors: Papa Johns and The Compass Food Foundation. NMSDC's Acres: Cultivating Equity in Black Agriculture program was established in 2022 to address a significant disparity in the U.S. agricultural industry. Today, only 1.4% of farmers identify as Black or mixed race, compared to about 14% a century ago. Furthermore, these farmers represent less than 0.5% of total U.S. farm sales. A collaborative effort between NMSDC, Cargill, UNFI, educational partner Southern University Ag Center, and other sponsors, the program aims to rectify this imbalance and elevate Black minority business enterprises (MBEs) in the agriculture industry by providing a pathway for Black farmers to achieve parity. Through an agreement with Smithfield Foods, Murphy Family Ventures reestablishes itself as one of the largest independent pork producers in the United States. The Murphy-owned farming business will have the capacity to produce approximately 3.2 million hogs annually for Smithfield's fresh pork operations. FFA is Good for Youth ... and America You know it's going to be a good day when the pilot invites passengers to congratulate the National FFA Organization members on the flight headed to the national FFA Convention. It gets even better when you have a moment to chat with a few FFA members as they celebrate representing their state at the National Convention, as I was blessed to do. Founded in 1928 as the Future Farmers of America, the name was changed in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity of roles in agriculture. Having grown up in ag country in west central Illinois, I have long appreciated FFA. My flight last Tuesday to Indianapolis, where the 97th FFA convention was taking place, was a heartwarming reminder of the #goodness,#perseverance, #selflessness and esprit de corps of farmers and others in agriculture. In farming, there is no whining or sleeping late. The animals and crops need you and need you to be on time. When a neighbor has a problem, you're there to help because it's just what people in agriculture do - help one another. Imagine that sense of #duty and teamwork prevalent in all parts of America, plus an earned #humility and civility because nature, animals and equipment that breaks have taught you that you will need others to get through it. Treating them ill today will come back to you tomorrow. A lot of life's most important and enduring lessons are learned on a farm.
