Which one are you choosing? 1924 60 years old Royal Brackla This extremely rare Royal Brackla was distilled in 1924 and lay?undisturbed for 60 years in the corner of a bond. Discovered by chance in 1984, this whisky was bottled to celebrate the distillery reopening in 1991. An extremely limited release which was gifted to staff and dignitaries, this is one of only 60 bottles which is why it is rarely seen at auction. 1926 63 years old Ben Nevis This incredible Ben Nevis was filled into single cask #322 in 1926, and by the late 1980s was?the oldest cask in the distillery's warehouse.?With?the Scotch Whisky Order of 1990 looming, which would?rule?that Scotch whisky must be bottled at a minimum strength of 40%, the maturing spirit would soon lose the legal requirements to be called Scotch Whisky.?In fact, only 14% of the original filling still remained in the cask at the time of bottling, with the remaining spirit sitting at just 36% ABV. To ensure this phenomenal cask would not go unappreciated, distillery manager Alex Ross bottled it in 1989, mere months before the new laws were in place. The oldest whisky from the distillery to date, this impressive 63 year old is an astonishing achievement. VINTAGE SPIRITS FESTIVAL - 15/6 - Leuven Do you know what time does to a spirit? We firmly believe that time is the most important ingredient to make a spirit truly unforgettable. Time allows for the base spirit to interact with its maturing vessel in a meaningful way. Flavours are axtracted from the wood. Harsher notes in the alcohol are mellowed or transformed. The spirit takes on a natural and alluring colour. But most of all, time allows for all these flavours to get to know each other, to start living together harmoniously, to mix and match until they achieve a total experience that is much more than the sum of its components. And you know what? We still can't really explain how it happens. It's a matter of tasting and experiencing the true nature of time. That's what makes tasting old spirits so unforgettable. they are literally a time machine to bygone days, with a sensory experience that exceeds mere visual or auditive input. An Interesting Week of Whisky Education!!! ?? I had a fantastic weekend in England's Western Lake District staying at the gorgeous The Wayside and Whisky Barn. A beautiful 17th century house with its own whisky room holding over 160 whiskies to sample. So I've obviously had to come home with a couple of new additions to my whisky collection. I've only been drinking whisky for a year, I used to like gins and ended up with a decent size collection of around 30 bottles. But then I decided in 2022 to give up alcohol for a year, which went on to being 18 months in the end. The strange thing is when I did go back to drinking I'd actually gone off gin altogether, how weird is that? So a friend got me to try whisky, and that was me converted. ?? I'm slowly beginning to understand what I like and what I don't. I do prefer a non-peaty whisky, one that's darker in colour usually from a sherry cask or red wine cask, with dried fruit undertones, basically I like whisky that tastes and looks like Christmas cake ??. These two are both sherry cask, dark in colour, cask strength too at 52% and 56%, the Glenturrett bottle is gorgeous, very heavy, it's like a crystal cut glass. So that's me spent up on whisky for a while after a couple of days of tasting 12 and 18 year old single malts. It was really fun learning and discovering different tastes, especially when the owner of the whisky barn was so knowledgeable and took all the fancy talk and mystery away. I think I'll now be able to confidently buy a slightly more expensive whisky knowing that I'll like the taste and it suits my preferences.
