Reading is Fundamental!

I read The Giver in 8th grade English, Lois Lowry taught me what a Dystopian world was. I read To Kill a Mockingbird in 9th grade English, Harper Lee taught me about Empathy. I read Brave New World in a college science and fiction class, Aldous Huxley taught me about what a world could look like if humanity and individuality wasn't prioritized. I read The Handmaid's Tale in 2023, Margaret Atwood taught me what life could be like for women in a patriarchal state and the means by which women would try to gain their agency. Books inspire, enlighten, educate, and represent the stories of anyone who has the courage to write it down. Let us learn, let us evolve, let us read. #BannedBooksWeek

The theme is Freed Between the Lines. I recently joined my granddaughter in reading a YA novel. When she asked me to read it, she said the book mentioned something she was having problems with. That was it. That off-the-cuff statement. There was a lot going on in the book I read. A lot. I thought back to some of the experiences I had in middle school. Did I find a safe place in a book back then? I think this is where those who want to ban so many of these books miss the mark. Young people need to be able see themselves in a safe place. A book is a safe place. To answer my question: Yes, I often did. Even so, our parents tried to prevent us from reading those books, tried to have them banned from the classroom. Those books that showed us we weren't alone. That gave us a mirror to our times. That spoke to the unasked, unanswered questions: Who am I? Can anyone see me? Is anyone else like me? Am I really all alone? My granddaughter offered me a conversational opener. So, yes. I read that book. And now, we can have a conversation. A conversation about the characters in the safe place. And if we meet in that safe place, we may also talk about the thing that is making her feel unsafe. And that's freedom. "Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. Without preservation, this heritage could be lost forever, leading to a diminished understanding of a community's identity and past. Preservation ensures that future generations have access to the knowledge contained within these books. Without preservation efforts, access to important information may become limited or even impossible, hindering research, education, and intellectual development. Many old books may be the only surviving copies of certain texts or manuscripts.
