When do you hire a Project Manager?

I love having the radio on in the morning. And this week I was completely taken by this interview on the Chris Evans breakfast show With Cal Newport on his book 'Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment without Burnout '.?His comments really resonated?with me after so long running on the treadmill?of busy-ness. Here are my take-outs: ? The more projects / activities you take on, the more 'project admin' you have to do. Soon, the admin of these projects overtakes the time available?to do the actual work you set out to achieve. (I am definitely guilty of taking too much on!) ? Talking about work isn't the same as doing actual work. Love this! Unfortunately, it's a real challenge?in big companies where reporting / meetings now seem to dominate our workload. ? Do fewer things at once and accomplish more (see admin overhead above). Queue work up and tackle things in succession once the previous things are done. We do this well in Tech development but, why is this so hard for day-to-day operations? ? Work at a natural pace.?Find the pace that you can work at where you really care about your craft /?quality. Be proud of what you're producing.

People remember how you treat them, especially in business. Treating people with respect and dignity is crucial. It’s about building relationships that last beyond immediate business transactions. At every step of my career, I’ve seen the impact of maintaining respectful and professional relationships. Years after working with someone, they often remember the quality of our interaction more than the specific outcomes of our projects. I've also tried to right my wrongs when I wasn’t as above board as possible. You can’t please everyone, but you know when you’re crossing a line. You can feel it. This principle applies universally, whether in software engineering, program management, or any other field. Dear Management Team! I wanted to bring to your attention a pressing concern regarding project assignments. It appears that some staff members, including supervisors have been assigned projects requiring a driving license and despite not possessing one. This mismatch creates unnecessary struggles and obstacles for the affected individuals. It's puzzling since management should be aware of staff capabilities and limitations. I kindly request: 1. Reevaluate project assignments to align with staff skills and qualifications. 2. Provide necessary support and resources for staff to acquire required skills example (driving license). 3. Consider temporary reassignments or adjustments until suitable arrangements are made. This will enhance productivity, reduce stress and promote a more efficient work environment. Thank you ????
